Perks for the Parents

Soak up island life at this beautifully styled contemporary beach house with ocean views a-plenty, and steps down to a private beach for watersports fun. It sleeps 12. There’s more than enough space both inside and out to accommodate larger family groups with roomy living spaces and a seriously beautiful kitchen-diner with views to match. A pretty deck area runs around the front of the house, with sliding doors providing seamless inside/outside living and a weber gas BBQ for laid back alfresco dining. The master suite has a superkingsize bed and an ensuite bathroom with a large shower, a roll-top bath and relaxing views across the pond. The hosts provide kayaks and paddleboards for exploring the coastline - it’s possible to kayak across the saltwater ponds off the beach over to Menemsha (the village where Jaws was filmed) on a good day. For land lovers, the local town of Chilmark is just a 5-minute drive with restaurants, farm shops and a community center offering day camps for kids and yoga classes for adults during the summer months.

Why Kids Love it

With wild swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and surfing just seconds from the residence’s front door, water babies of all ages will be in their element. The saltwater pond outside the house has sheltered, calmer waters ideal for smaller ones whilst the wavier Atlantic is just a short walk for body boarders and surf enthusiasts. For those who prefer land-based activity, there’s a generous lawn with space for games and picnics, a hammock and a fire-pit for toasting marshmallows and stargazing. The local town has an active community center with day camps for kids offering arts and crafts, drama, sailing, surfing and tennis. There are regular local farmer’s markets for aspiring cooks who enjoy gathering ingredients, and a herb garden back at the house for garnishing that day's BBQ offering. Inside, there are plenty of books and board games as well as a large TV for movie nights in. The kids’ quarters are on a floor of their own with 4 single beds up in the galleried attic for sleepover style fun, and an additional play den.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights. This residence is not suitable for very young kids (or those who cannot swim), due to its un-gated access to a saltwater pond only steps away from the deck, and the unsupervised private beach with large Atlantic waves. There is a galleried attic bedroom with steep stairs and no stair gate. The residence has fast WiFi, air-conditioning, and a washer/dryer. Please note that cellphone signal is quite unreliable. There is parking available at the house and a car is recommended due to its rural location.

About the Location

The residence is located at the end of a private lane, a 5-minute drive from the center of Chilmark on the eastern side of Martha’s Vineyard. It is well equipped with a general store, restaurant, library and farm stand. There are regular festivals including book and film events, and a variety of classes in the local community space including contemporary dance and yoga. The village of Menemsha is a 10-minute drive away with fish markets, restaurants and charter fishing available by arrangement. The house is approximately 30 minutes’ drive from Martha's Vineyard airport and 45 minutes from the ferry terminals at Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs.

Accommodation Details

The residence has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms set over 2 floors. On the ground floor, there’s a large living room with a sofa, armchairs, fireplace and TV. It leads through to a spacious kitchen/diner, fully equipped with everything a guest would expect including a dishwasher, and a large island for meal prep. The roomy dining table seats 12 and is situated by the sliding door providing direct access to a deck that runs along the whole front of the house. There’s a second large alfresco dining table outside on a sheltered patio with sweeping views of the ponds and a smaller dining area behind the house with a large Weber gas grill, herb garden, wildflower meadow and an Indian metal fire-pit for toasting marshmallows. There is an outdoor shower on the rear deck. There are 5 bedrooms in the main house: the second bedroom is on the ground floor with a queensize bed, an ensuite shower room and sliding doors onto the deck. The primary bedroom is on the first floor and is accessed via its own staircase from the living room. It has a superkingsize bed and an ensuite bathroom with a large shower and a roll top bath. The third and fourth bedrooms have 1 kingsize bed which can be set up as 2 singles and 1 double bed respectively and share a bathroom with a shower. There are 4 single beds in the galleried attic space, ideal for older kids. There is a separate annex outbuilding which is not accessible for guests.

Style Notes

Contemporary island hideaway. Relaxed beach pad meets modern chic at this light, bright and spacious residence. The interiors utilise a neutral palette with whitewashed walls and blue/grey painted floorboards for the ultimate coastal calm vibes. Furnishings are a gorgeous mix of vintage finds and antique treasures from Europe and America, uplifted by luxe textiles and handpicked art works. All the bathrooms are fitted with ‘waterworks’ fittings and contemporary showers with a sprinkling of retro added via the primary suite's roll top bath. Large windows and sliding doors can be flung open to bring in the ocean breeze alongside the sweeping views. We love the outside areas here with their spacious deck, alfresco dining patio and rolling lawns offering plenty of places to relax with front row ocean side seating.

With family scattered across the US and Europe, we have spent many wonderful times together in our magical Chilmark house. It is the perfect place to relax, host family and friends and enjoy the ocean and nature.

Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts

This idyllic summer haven off the coast of Cape Cod still feels like old time Americana with farm stands, comfortable inns, local fairs and parades, and some superb state beaches. Rent bikes and cruise around the island’s quiet roads, catch a ride on the historic Flying Horses Carousel at Oak Bluffs, marvel at winged creatures at the Felix Neck Wildlife Sanctuary, and enjoy cold treats from the many ice-cream stands. Pleasures here are wonderfully simple.
