Perks for the Parents

This spacious family home with plenty of space to play indoors and out, is in central Silicon Valley close to Palo Alto and Stanford. It has a great layout for a family stay with children’s bedrooms on the second floor plus a large and open kitchen/dining area. The garden with outdoor dining, patio and seating is a plus; it also has a mature lemon and orange tree that fruit year round. The downstairs bedroom would suit a nanny or au pair.

Why Kids Love it

Fresh eggs in the morning, courtesy of the 4 chickens in the garden, are a big perk. The house is well equipped for children age 6+ with plenty of girls toys for those under 10 and boys toys for those under 12. There are outdoor toys for the garden as well as a basketball hoop in the driveway; there are lots of books plus a large stock of board games inside. There is a large rope swing in the front yard. The basement can be used for kids toys or as a play area. There are numerous parks nearby and there is excellent road and mountain biking in the area. Two adult and 2 children's bikes can be used.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 days. The house is best for those with older kids - there are limited supplies or equipment for babies/toddlers. There are no stairgates and the access to the basement is down a steep flight of steps in the garden - toddlers need supervision. Gates can be closed to make sure kids don't wander on to the street. The basement is located from an outside door. Car rental is recommended; there is easy parking at the property. The chickens will need feeding; if you prefer not to care for them, other arrangements can be made.

About the Location

The house is just south of central Menlo Park and is close to Palo Alto and Stanford. It is centrally located in Silicon Valley. It is about half a mile from the main shopping/dining area of town, an easy walk or drive away. There is a grocery store and coffee shop within walking distance and it is 5 minutes to the Stanford shopping mall. Bikes are provided and there are great cycle routes in the area and nearby. The train to San Francisco takes 35 minutes and runs from a station 3/4 of a mile from the house. It takes approximately 30 minutes to drive to San Francisco Airport, 30-45 minutes to AT&T Park (Giants) and Levi Stadium (49ers).

Accommodation Details

This 4-bedroom 2-floor house has an open plan style including living room, kitchen and dining room downstairs. There is a master bedroom with queen bed, large bath and walk-in closet plus 2 kids rooms (1 with 1 twin bed, 1 with 2 twin beds) with a shared bathroom upstairs, and a downstairs guest room with full/double bed and bathroom. There is also a small office with a large work space. There is a yard and outdoor patio with barbecue, and a basement with TV and gaming station.

Style Notes

Bright and modern. This is a bright property with a beautiful and huge oak tree in the front yard and plenty of lawn in the front for kids to play. It was completely remodeled in 2012 and has a Mediterranean modern style. Original artworks hang on the wall and living spaces are comfortable and relaxing. The garden includes lounging areas and shady spots under colorful sunshades and umbrellas. We love the outdoor dining area, the sleek bathrooms and the unicorn head on the wall of the playroom.

Menlo Park, Palo Alto

Green and friendly

This Bay Area town, sandwiched between San Francisco and Palo Alto, is family-friendly, safe and has a real sense of community. There are plenty of parks in the neighborhood plus a small and friendly downtown. Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo and Stanford Sailing Center are two of the attractions nearby, and of course, it’s easy to get into San Francisco. After a day in the city, returning to this quiet, friendly area is a real pleasure.
