Perks for the Parents

This beautifully stylish 3-bedroom, 2-story colonial house with a pool and interior courtyard brings the outside in and has equipment to make a stay with babies or toddlers easy. It sleeps 6 + 1. This Mexican abode is partially outdoors with a large ceiba tree growing through the center and rooms that are open to the garden. The tub in the primary bathroom is a generous soaking tub (large enough for 2 adults and a toddler) and has a kingsize bed. The additional guest bedroom downstairs is ideal for an older child or nanny/au pair.

Why Kids Love it

Kids will love the garden and pool for jumping in on hot days. The house is well set up for a family stay with toys and books for children under 10 and a toddler step-up stool for the kitchen, pack ‘n’ play, pool floaties and a stroller – you can leave all of this at home. The house feels like a treehouse and many of the spaces are connected by outdoor areas. The covered patio has an upright piano and a small fountain with fish. The children's room has a full-sized floor mattress and its own shower.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights. The house is very safe and secure, located on a busy street in the downtown area. There are many sites within walking distance and a paid parking lot 1 block away. The stairs are concrete and there is no gate so young children should be carefully supervised here. The pool area can be locked from the kitchen. The guest bedroom is off of the main hallway on the ground floor, french doors then lead to a covered patio with garden and the cistern (guest bathroom) and to the kitchen (which is enclosed by steel windows/doors). Use of a car is recommended to explore further afield. Fly into Mérida International Airport, about 20 minutes by taxi.

About the Location

Located in central Mérida, the capital city of the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico, this residence makes a great base for exploring its Mayan and colonial history. Nearby you’ll find 2 vibrant markets, restaurants, shops and the famous avenue of Paseo de Montejo showcasing the city’s impressive colonial architecture. Hire a car to explore cenotes for peaceful swimming, haciendas, beaches and the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza. Kids can visit the city’s Mayan World Museum and Gran Museo del Mundo Maya to learn more about Mayan culture.

Accommodation Details

This residence has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and is on 2 floors. On the 1st floor is the main living space with a covered portico and garden space adjoining the entry / living room / guest room to the kitchen and plunge pool surrounded by flowers and fauna. The queensize guest bedroom is on the main floor of the house along with a bathroom located inside an old cistern with access from the garden and covered portico. Stairs from the kitchen lead up the kingsize primary bedroom with tiled floors and large ensuite bathroom (with soaking tub and shower) and the kids’ room with a double / full floor mattress – both have their own private, full bathroom. The 'hallway' connecting the two rooms is open air with a view of the ceiba tree and garden space below.

Style Notes

Historic colonial grandeur. The house dates from the 1800s with colourful original tiled floors imported from France that adorn many of the rooms. Antique pieces mix with contemporary furniture and pastel walls contrast with a bright pops of color. The kitchen has been remodelled with natural stone, concrete work tops and a stainless-steel hob. The décor is understated and allows the wonderful collection of Mexican art takes center stage. In the garden is an antique water fountain, a pergola with outdoor dining and many potted plants. We love the curated collections of curiosities, the spacious interiors with room for all the family, and the lovely garden and pool area.

We are a Texas family who spends several months out of the year living in Mexico as well as traveling the world with our two young children. We look forward to hosting you and your family in our little colonial oasis in the beautiful city of Mérida! We are very interested in home exchanges as well :)
