Perks for the Parents

A wonderfully spacious and relaxing residence just 15 minutes from downtown LA, with a stylish outdoor pool, a hot tub and bikes to borrow. It sleeps 5 + 2. Offering up seamless indoor-outdoor living, the downstairs bi-fold doors can be flung open to let in the sunshine and SoCal breeze, as well as letting the kids out to explore the fully fenced backyard (the pool comes with a safey cover for extra peace of mind). There’s a Sonos player for favourite playlists, a fully stocked bar and a smart patio/sundeck for enjoying evening drinks or alfresco dinners. Those who love to cook will be in their element with a chef's grade kitchen, while those who prefer to order in, or eat out, have plenty of options on the doorstep. On cooler evenings, there’s a wood burning fireplace for cozying up around, and a TV with surround sound for family movie nights. The primary bedroom is the perfect retreat after a long day with a kingsize bed and an ensuite with an extra deep soaking tub.

Why Kids Love it

The perfect ‘city’ base for kids who appreciate laid back vibes and serious space. This leafy residence comes with giant front and back yards to run around in, a large outdoor pool with games and plenty of play space inside too. There’s a playroom stocked with craft supplies, science kits and toys, library cabinets full of boardgames and puzzles, and a games console for older ones. The kids' rooms have more toys, and plenty of fun decoration as well as ensuite bathrooms. The neighborhood is very family friendly with kids playing out in gardens and front yards. Bikes are provided for exploring the local neighborhood, with the added bonus of residential streets being closed to vehicular traffic. On Sunday mornings there's a farmer's market at the end of the block with face painting and live music. There’s also a library and pocket park a few blocks away, and the beach is a short drive.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights. Please note that the pool has an automatic cover that must remain closed while not in use or while kids are unsupervised. The gates to the backyard should also remain closed to ensure the garden is ‘fully fenced’. The stairs do not have gates, and there is no childproofing on any of the windows or cabinets, so this home is best suited for kids aged 5 and up. There are blackout drapes / shades in all of the bedrooms. There is WiFi and air conditioning. There is plenty of street parking available as well as space to park tandem in the driveway. The home has an alarm system, which guests are asked to enable when not in residence.

About the Location

The residence is located on a leafy, residential street in the Mid City area of Los Angeles, nestled between downtown LA (15 minutes’ drive) and Santa Monica beach (20 minutes). Ideally placed for families who want to easily adventure throughout the Los Angeles area, the local neighborhood provides a family friendly base from which to explore. There's a weekly farmer’s market, a library, parks and playgrounds as well as coffee shops and restaurants all an easy walk or cycle away. For families who prefer public transport, there are local buses which go straight down Crenshaw from where it's possible to catch the subway heading west (beach) or east (downtown). The closest international airport is LAX around a 25-minute drive.

Accommodation Details

The residence has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms set over 2 floors. The central living areas are all downstairs on the ground floor. They include a lovely ‘adult’ living room featuring a beautiful Batchelder wood burning fireplace; a playroom with toys; a laundry room with a washer/dryer; a mud room; a powder room and a library/family snug that includes a double sofa bed and a large TV with surround sound. Those who love to cook will be in their element with a chef's kitchen that includes a 6-burner range, griddle, two ovens and a dining counter seating 3; there's a backyard vegetable and herb garden for procuring ultra fresh produce. For eating, there's a separate formal dining room towards the back of the house with a table seating 14, and bi-fold doors that open to a large deck which has further seating, perfect for dining alfresco. Upstairs on the second floor guests will find the primary bedroom which comes with a kingsize bed and an ensuite bathroom with a deep soaking tub and a walk in shower; a second ‘blue bedroom’ with a double bed and an ensuite shower room, and a pink bedroom with a single bed and an ensuite bathroom with a bath tub. There is also a small office. Outside space includes a front yard and a back yard including a patio deck with alfresco dining, sofa seating and parasols, a swimming pool with toys and games, and a hot tub.

Style Notes

Dreamy sub-urban. This 100-year-old house has been meticulously updated, retaining plenty of original details and period features, including a fine Batchelder fireplace in the living room. The hosts have put comfort and relaxed family living center stage by combining formal areas with laid-back nooks and chill out snugs designed to appeal to every age group. Fine fabrics, chic furniture and designer wallpapers add both style and luxury while blankets, rugs and book-filled shelves maintain a cozy tone. The library features black and white photographs of well-known actors and artists shot by the host's father for Life Magazine. We love the whimsical wallpaper in the pink bedroom, and the gorgeous backyard with its pool and sun-drenched patio, perfect for morning coffees or evening tipples.
