A family friendly retreat in Mill Valley with beautiful California views, a quarter-acre lot and plenty of kids toys to entertain little ones. It sleeps 8 + 1. This is a great space for children and parents alike, with an expansive fenced-in yard that boasts plenty of space to explore, plus areas for grown-ups to relax. For active families, it’s right near the Mill Valley-Sausalito bike path, and there are plenty of parks and green spaces nearby to enjoy the great outdoors. For parents who like to work out at home, there’s a Peleton bike to borrow, and there’s even a separate office if you need to catch up on work.

Why Kids Love it

Kids will love staying here because the hosts have toys and books galore, as well as a backyard with a sand pit and outdoor toys. There’s a playground just 1 block away, plus a huge sprawling green field also just 1 block away, which is perfect for soccer and other outdoor sports. The location has easy access to bike paths that can take you all around Mill Valley and Marin, all the way to Sausalito along the water (20 minutes by bike). The hosts also have lots of beach gear available on request for days at the coast, including boogie boards, a paddle board and sand toys.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 30 nights. Safety notes: there are 2 sets of stairs. The fireplace in the living room has a safety cover. The windows are large and low to the ground but all have window safety locks. The 2 decks have safety nets securing between the rails for small children. The yard is accessible from the lower level only. Bikes are available for guests to borrow during their stay.

About the Location

The house is located in Mill Valley, just 5 minutes’ walk from the Bayfront parks on the water. It’s located next to a bike path for easy cycling access around the area, and it’s also close to the freeway for fast roads into San Francisco and Stinson Beach (both 20 minutes’ drive). It’s 5 minutes’ drive to Sausalito and 10 minutes to the Golden Gate Bridge viewing point. For days out of the city, head to Sonoma (30 minutes) or Napa (45 minutes) to explore the regions’ world-famous wineries and vineyards. San Francisco airport is around 40 minutes by car.

Upstairs, the fully equipped kitchen has an eat-in dining nook, while the open plan living/dining room has a table for 8 and a terrace with seating and beautiful views. Downstairs, there’s a family room and an office, as well as the bedrooms: the primary bedroom has a Californian kingsize bed and ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower; bedroom 2 has a single bed and 1 crib; bedrooms 3 and 4 both have double beds. Bedroom 4 also has an ensuite bathroom with a walk-in shower, and there’s a separate family bathroom.

Style Notes

California cool. Bright and light thanks to lots of large windows and sliding doors, the hosts have added touches of boho minimalist and laid-back decor. Playful children’s rooms are decorated in bright colors, with neon signs, wooden accents and natural wood toys. Windows frame the incredible views from multiple rooms in the house, letting the natural Californian outdoor scenes flood in. We love the unique artwork throughout the house, the beautiful brick fireplace and the exposed wood paneled ceiling in the dining area.

Mill Valley, Marin County

At the base of Mount Tam

Voted as one of the top 10 small towns in America to live in, Mill Valley, four miles north of San Francisco, has everything to offer a family, from superb kid-friendly beaches within a five-minute drive to hikes around Mount Tamalpais, family-friendly restaurants and cafés, and a lovely downtown with parks, playgrounds and interesting independent stores. Don’t miss migrating the Californian grey whales just off the coast from December to May each year.
