Perks for the Parents

An uber stylish contemporary residence with SoCal hideaway vibes, in the celebrity mecca of Montecito. It sleeps 8+1. Nestled between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains, this architect designed home offers the best of all worlds, with modern, elegant interiors surrounded by nature-rich gardens that make the most of the mild year-round climate (Montecito gets an average of 285 days of sunshine per year). Raised floors are set amongst the tree canopies to create a peaceful hangout space with huge glass windows and a spacious primary bedroom with its own furnished terrace for soaking it all in. The primary bathroom’s spa-worthy tub gives parents even more excuses to slow the pace and enjoy some time out for themselves. Downstairs, there’s a playroom and ample space for the kids to run in the garden while parents enjoy some leisurely alfresco dining. Montecito’s upscale boutiques and restaurants are nearby, for those who prefer to eat out, and the wineries of Santa Ynez are perfectly placed for picking up a bottle or two for picnic dinners on the beach.

Why Kids Love it

With stylish tree house vibes, the residence offers up plenty of opportunity for fun and games above and below the canopies. Bedrooms sit prettily amongst the treetops with lofty, leafy views and plenty of toys and books for children under 10. The spacious layout allows enough room for everyone to have space to relax or play. There are 3 living rooms, 1 of which doubles as a dedicated play zone with games, crafts and a large TV for watching movies. Outside, the expansive gardens are a mix of nature-rich wild areas and landscaped lawns with a picnic table, outdoor games and a play area with swings, a climbing wall and a slide. For the adventurous, there’s plenty more opportunity to get active with hiking and biking trails nearby, plus a deer preserve literally across the street with walking trails that span several acres. Local beaches including Miramar and Butterfly are a short drive away and the hosts are happy to lend their stand-up paddleboards or help arrange local kayaking trips. A crib or pack-and-play, highchair, baby monitors, bed rails and babysitters can also be arranged on request.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights. There are 4 sets of staircases at the residence so younger kids will need to be supervised. One set leads up to the front door, one small set in the hallway (3 steps) a set leading upstairs to the offices (which is gated) and a small set from the deck to the back yard. There is good Wifi throughout and dedicated office space for those who need to work. There’s air conditioning available during the warmer months and a washer/dryer. There is car parking available at the residence and a car is recommended to explore the area. The hosts are happy to help arrange for inhouse chefs/catering, babysitters and local excursions on request. The closest international airport is at Santa Barbara, 20 minutes away by car or cab. Los Angeles is just under 2 hours.

About the Location

The residence is located in Montecito, an idyllic small town which borders Santa Barbara on the central California coast. Known for its stunning natural beauty, it's characterized by lush landscapes and beautiful ocean and mountain views. Montecito village center has a chic village atmosphere featuring upscale boutiques, fine dining restaurants, and art galleries. The house is 6 minutes from the upper village shopping area, 8 minutes from the lower village shopping area, and 10 minutes from the Montecito Country Mart. Lotusland, a 37-acre botanical garden which was recently named one of the 10 best in the world is located in Montecito, just 12 minutes by car. The coast here is considered one of the prettiest in California, with the beaches of Loon Point, Summerland, Miramar and Butterfly all around a 10-minute drive. Private sailing charters and kayaking trips can be booked locally.

Accommodation Details

The house has 4 bedrooms, plus a bonus room and 4 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. The front entrance is a few steps up from the garden and leads into open plan style living areas downstairs. As you walk through the front door the first, formal living room (with fireplace) is the first room on the right. Then there's a spacious fully equipped kitchen with a coffee machine, kitchen island with bar stool seating and everything you’d need for cooking up a family feast. This leads to a separate dining table seating 6, before you reach the other downstairs living area/den/play area/TV room, which follow out to the back deck overlooking the backyard. The bedrooms are along the hallway – the primary coming with a kingsize bed, a walk in closet, a private furnished terrace and a large bathroom with a shower and soaking tub overlooking the garden. The second bedroom (with a queensize bed) opens up to a private deck that overlooks the lemon tree and beautiful scenery. This shares a bathroom with the third bedroom (with a double bed) and the fourth, which is currently set up with a crib and could fit an additional toddler bed if required. An additional powder room is also nearby. Upstairs there are 2 rooms currently used as artist studios/offices, a bathroom with shower, and a third living area with a double memory foam sofabed which works well as an bonus guest area. Three of the 4 bathrooms have showers, one has a bath (and shower) and one is a powder bathroom. Outside the landscaped gardens are set over 1 acre to provide a pretty, expansive back yard. It includes an alfresco dining deck with a table seating 8, a sofa area, a gravel zone with picnic table, a lawn and a mini playground with swings, a climbing wall and a slide.

Style Notes

Contemporary Californian. A modern classic of redwood and glass offering up effortlessly stylish living amongst the charming Montecito countryside. In true SoCal glass house tradition, large picture windows and doors feature widely, bringing in views of Californian oaks, olive, eucalyptus, and fruit trees which are integrated into the architecture of the home. Interiors were designed by Faye McAullife, an LA based designer, featuring natural woods, rustic stone and whitewashed walls complimented by vintage finds, warm textiles and bohemian wall art. We love the luxurious freestanding tub in the primary bedroom with prime garden views to accompany decadent soaking sessions. The bedroom's private terrace is perfectly set up to keep the indulgence rolling with alfresco sofas for enjoying laid back morning coffees or evening aperitifs amongst the treetops.
