Perks for the Parents

This lovely Dutch home in a quiet village 20 km from Amsterdam is perfectly placed for a city meets country stay, with a great garden overlooking the water and plenty to appeal to traveling families. With fabulous lakeside views, it’s a relaxing place to stay - and there's even a beach with a playground next door. The lake can be explored by boat, taking you to small beaches, while the village and neighborhood can be explored by bikes provided by the owners. Modern, bright and cozy, the house has a great garden for kids and plenty of amenities for visiting families, including Netflix and WiFi.

Why Kids Love it

Fresh air and water are in abundance here, just as children like it. They can swim in the crystal clear water of the lake, and play on the beach next to the house, where there is a playground for children aged under 12 in the summer. Child-friendly lake beaches can be reached by boat or bike nearby; the beach is shallow so it’s fun for small children to play in, while the middle of the lake is deep. The house has lots of toys and books for kids under 10, and is a great family space with a living room large enough for wheeled toys; the bathroom has a big bath tub and a baby bath is provided.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 4 nights. The house is well maintained and child friendly; the garden is fenced in. An old Volvo 850 family car is available for guest use, as well as bikes for 3 adults (of which 1 is a bakfiets/cargo bike) and a boat (6-8 people). The house has Netflix and WiFi. Private parking for 2 cars is available plus free parking everywhere in the village. Children must always wear life vests when they are in the boat: the water in the middle of the lake very deep. There are several life vests for children available. Kids should be supervised in the garden at all times.

About the Location

The house is in Nederhorst den Berg, a small village between the River Vecht and Spiegelplas lake 20 km south of Amsterdam. It’s a peaceful location with great transport connections to the rest of the country: you can reach Amsterdam by car or you can go to Weesp station (by bus or car, free parking) and take the train to Amsterdam (only 15 minutes from Weesp to Amsterdam Central station). Within 30 minutes you can be in the center of Amsterdam. Utrecht and Schiphol airport are also a 30-minute drive away. Car rental is useful but by no means essential for exploring the area.

Style Notes

Modern, bright and light. With the feel of a holiday home, yet with all the amenities of a family home, this luminous home is set beside a lake and offers peace and quiet for all. The downstairs living space include a great dining table in the conservatory, ideal for family meals, while throughout the house, big windows, parquet floors, high ceilings and neutral colors add to the feeling of space. We love the views of the lake through the conservatory windows, ideal while having breakfast at the large pine table, the hanging hammock chair for a dash of 1970s chic, and the sweet touches in the kids rooms, from the pastel pink wardrobe to the scattering of stars on the wall.

Nederhorst den Berg, The Netherlands

Waterfront and well connected

A small village situated between the River Vecht and the Spiegelplas lake, Nederhorst den Berg is 20 km from Amsterdam and a little oasis from the city. Within 30 minutes you can be in the center of Amsterdam or Utrecht, soaking up culture, pavement cafés and pretty waterways. After a day in the city, a morning spent roaming round the lake in search of birds and wildflower hits the perfect reset button.

My husband and twin 9-year-old boys stayed 5 nights at this bright, cozy waterfront house in August (so I am writing the review on their behalf). The house is very conveniently located, near Amsterdam and Utrecht where my husband's family lives. They arrived to find a generous housewarming gift of yummy chocolates, traditional Dutch licorice and a sampling of local beers. Weather was unlucky during their stay (rained every day) but they nevertheless had a great time fishing on the owner's boat, and the hammock was also a big hit with one of our boys. My husband also loved the bright light and views from the large windows. The kitchen was well laid out and stocked with the basic necessities. The beds were quite comfortable. House could have benefited from a good dusting and wipedown. Lieke, the hostess, was great to deal with, very responsive.

We had a wonderful time at Liekes house. It is cozy, with plenty of toys and in a beautiful surrounding. The view of the lake and the boat are unbeatable. Lieke is a very friendly host and the communication was perfect. We couldn´t have asked for anything more...

Such an amazing stay in this wonderful house! The view of the lac was beautiful, the tiny village is perfect, close to Amsterdam (less than 30 minutes). All you need for your kids! Lieke and her family were really, really lovely. One of the most beautiful housing we had! Many thanks !
