Perks for the Parents

This contemporary, luxury residence, perched on a windswept headland with panoramic views of the ocean and countryside, has its own wine cellar and tasting room, a personal chef, and 1000 acres to enjoy. It sleeps 12 + 2. The Cooper Residence is one of 4 luxury private residences located at The Landing in the Bay of Islands. Parents can taste wines made from grapes grown at The Landing’s own vineyard. This is a place where you can take it easy – you’ll have your own personal chef who will custom-design menus to produce delicious dishes – often made with vegetables grown on site. The huge, double-height kitchen is perfect for entertaining and socializing, while outdoor activities from snorkeling, hiking the many private trails, boating and skippered big-game fishing are all tantalizingly close at hand.

Why Kids Love it

The Cooper Residence is well suited to all age groups including babies, toddlers and children. However, please note that there are ungated internal stairs. For babies, a wooden crib, travel crib, pack 'n’ play, buggy, car seats and high chairs are available on request. Meanwhile, older children who like to be outside will love the stand-up paddleboards, 2-person kayak, single kayak, mountain bikes, tennis court and basketball court. The Bay of Islands is a popular summertime destination for Kiwi families with plenty to do to keep children happy. Check out Waitangi bike park, Kawiti Caves where you can see thousands of luminous glow worms and rainforest, or visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds to learn more about the first meeting between the British and the Maoris that changed history.

The Cooper Residence is in the 1000-acre site of The Landing situated in the Bay of Islands, 140 subtropical islands off the coast of New Zealand’s North Island. The area is known for its undeveloped beaches, turquoise water and wild dolphins. The historic town of Russell and the Waitangi treaty grounds are nearby, which guests can explore by transfer on The Landing’s boat, Iti Rangi. Accommodation Details

The Cooper Residence is spread out over a 2 storied main house and a tower. On the ground floor of the house is a lobby, a barn-style kitchen with a breakfast bar and dining space that seats up to 14, a large lounge with a fireplace, bar, and a library. There is also a garage, mudroom, washroom, laundry room and butler’s pantry. Upstairs on the first floor are bedrooms 1 to 4. They are kingsize (2 can also be divided into single beds) and all have ensuite bathrooms (one suite has a bathtub, others have showers). At the northwestern end of the house is an elliptical stone ‘remnant tower’, which houses a wine cellar and tasting room. Above, is a queensize (or 2 singles) bedroom suite and ensuite bathroom. Above that is a curved ‘observatory’ roof deck for dining and star-gazing. Outside are a patio with seating, gardens with a vegetable patch, a garage, and a grassy lawn overlooking the bay.

Style Notes

Modern luxury. Designed by New Zealand architect Pip Cheshire, the Cooper Residence is modelled on a basic cruciform shape – a long barn-like structure flanked by two contemporary pavilions accommodating the master bedroom and main living areas. The interior, created by Seattle-based Terry Hunziker, is luxurious with an industrial edge, featuring rough-hewn wood, blackened steel and exposed bolts. Walls and ceilings are lined with rich timber and the monumental scale of the house is carried through in the heavy beams and huge rusticated steel fireplace. Finishes are contemporary and eclectic, incorporating animal skins, stone, metals and woven Maori panels. We love the contemporary New Zealand art and objects, the flaxen earthy tones of the décor, and the unique and beautiful architectural surprises of grand ceilings and curved walls. And, of course, that view.
