Perks for the Parents

A classic 70’s beach condo with contemporary coastal interiors and an impressive vintage record collection, just a hop, skip and a jump from the beach. It sleeps 6. Set within a family-friendly community, guests have access to a host of community facilities including a pier, boat launch, 2 outdoor pools, tennis courts and a seasonal fire pit area during the colder months. Beautiful Jockey's Ridge State Park is on the back door with coastal trails suitable for all ages leading to a secluded soundside beach and the tallest active sand dune system in the eastern USA. In addition, guests have access to the local YMCA during their stay which has both indoor and outdoor pools, hot tub, sauna, full gym, exercise classes, basketball courts, and more. The residence comes with a private patio garden including alfresco dining and a BBQ, and there’s plenty of space for relaxing inside with a roomy corner sofa, a vintage record player, and a smart TV. The primary bedroom has a queen size bed and its own balcony with beautiful views over the sand dunes and Roanoke Sound. The sunsets are epic from the community pier or the secluded sound beach at the end of the day.

Why Kids Love it

With a playground as their backyard there’s no chance of the kids getting bored. From the rolling sand dunes of Jockey's Ridge State Park to the impressive local sports facilities, there’s something to suit all ages and interests including tennis, pickleball, basketball and swimming. Guests will be provided with passes to use the local YMCA’s indoor and outdoor pools, as well as their outdoor splash pad while those keen for some ocean action can rent paddle boards, kayaks and surfboards locally or head out on a dolphin/whale watching boat trip. Little paddlers have sound beach minutes’ walk from their door, shielded from the winds and larger waves of the ocean side, it’s ideal for those learning to swim. Dowdy Park is a short distance away and is an excellent playground for kids to release any leftover energy. On rainy days the kids will absolutely love a trip to visit The North Carolina Aquarium at Roanoke Island. After a busy day, there’s plenty of room to relax at the residence with a smart TV, vintage record player and double size bunk bed for sleepover style fun.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights. The residence is best suited for kids over 10 years old, however infants in arms and younger kids who will respect the space are welcome. There is fast WiFi, air conditioning and a washer/dryer for added convenience. Car hire is recommended to explore the wider area, though it is possible to explore locally by bike - local hire is available. Please note that there is a doorbell security camera at the house’s entrance and another security camera that covers the perimeter of the private back patio. Sorry, no pets or parties. The closest international airport is Norfolk International (ORF) 1 hour 45 minutes’ drive.

About the Location

The beach house is located in Nags Head, on the coastal outer banks of North Carolina. Jockey’s Ridge State Park, known for its towering sand dunes is on the doorstep of the residence, providing walking and biking paths to both Roanoke Sound (2 minutes’ walk) one side of the bank and the ocean facing beaches on the other. Bonnet St. beach is particularly popular with families, having showers, changing facilities and a volleyball court – it is easily reached by car (4 minutes), bike (9 minutes), or via a 30-minute walk. There are plenty of deli’s, cafes and restaurants in the center of Nags Head, a 4-minute drive – as well as Dowdy Park playground for younger ones. This is a hidden gem surrounded by nature, yet close to all the action. The soundfront community is bordered by Nags Head Woods‚ Jockey's Ridge and Roanoke Sound. Our neighbors are a wonderful mix of full time residents, private second homes, and a select few vacation rentals. Some homes in the community have been owned by the same families for generations. There are many points of interest within a 30 minute drive from the house including The Wright Brothers National Memorial, Fort Raleigh National Historic Site, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge, various historic lighthouses, The Lost Colony, The Elizabethan Gardens, and much more.

Accommodation Details

The residence has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms set over 2 floors. The entrance is on the ground floor, opening onto a hallway which leads to a powder room, a laundry room with washing/drying facilities and a central open plan style living/dining space beyond. The dining area has a table seating 6 and leads into the fully stocked kitchen, equipped with everything a guest would require including a microwave, blender, toaster, and coffee maker. In the living room zone (separated from the dining area by some artfully placed cupboards), guests have a large corner sofa, a smart TV, and an electric fire for cozying up around during the winter months. There’s also a record player and guests are welcome to browse the host’s impressive vinyl collection. Sliding glass doors open from the living room onto a private patio with a gas grill and plenty of seating. Upstairs, guests will find 3 bedrooms. The primary comes with a queensize bed and balcony with views of Jockey's Ridge State Park. The primary bathroom has a bathtub and a shower. The second bedroom has a double bed and views of the sound. The third bedroom is the kid’s room with a bunk bed including a queensize bottom bunk and a single top bunk. Bedrooms 2 and 3 share the second bathroom which also has a bathtub and a shower.

Style Notes

Contemporary beach condo. Originally built in the 1970's, this classic beach residence has been carefully renovated, taking plenty of inspiration from its beautiful surroundings. The hosts have kept interiors light, bright and airy, adding playful coastal touches including surf boards and modern artworks by local artists. Wooden floorboards, the contemporary fireplace and feature lighting add coziness and charm, with a luxurious corner sofa providing the perfect place to relax after a long day at the beach. We love the sweeping views of the sound and the state park from the main upstairs bedroom, and balcony, as well as the host’s vintage record station with a whole vinyl library to explore.

Married in June of 2012, Heidi and Randy have been working hard to create a farm full of gardens, fruit trees/bushes, and love. There are chickens, two horses, two cats, and two dogs who reside on the farm. In November of 2013 a little baby Reed, aka Eloise, was added to the mix. Currently all the produce that is grown is used in the home kitchen as well as shared with neighbors. The farm is not certified anything, but everything grown is done so with a conscience. There are no insecticides or other chemicals used – spray free. On the farm the earth is treated with respect. We love our farm, but we also love to travel. As a family we have lived in Costa Rica and England for extended periods as well as traveled to other parts of Europe and all over the USA. We enjoyed hosting families so much we bought another house in a nearby village. The Batesville House has been a fun project full of love. We would love to host your family at either home.
