Perks for the Parents

A fun modern home in Costa Mesa, California with a swimming pool, hot tub and a huge choice of toys, games and books for the whole family. It sleeps 10. This large family home is big enough for 2 families to share, or for parents traveling with extended family or nannies. The hosts are also open to guests using their minivan if you have different members of the family staying during your vacation. These accommodating hosts (a family of 6) like to customize a welcome basket for visitors - they will leave some games and goodies out according to the ages of guests coming - and they are happy to recommend amazing local babysitters. Parents will love the huge kitchen and the relaxed living spaces where it’s easy to keep an eye on little ones. Well set up for a family stay, this spacious home is the perfect retreat after a day out spent at Disneyland or down at the beach.

Why Kids Love it

This house has a choice of kids rooms, all decorated with fun, playful furnishings and stocked with toys, games and books for all ages. Indoors, there’s a piano in the living room for wannabe musicians, as well as an XBox and Roku with access to Netflix, Youtube, Apple TV and Amazon Prime. Outside there’s a basketball hoop, pool toys, and skate ramps - it’s a quiet residential street so it’s safe to play outdoors. If you use the skate ramps please wear helmets! The swimming pool in the backyard starts at 3 feet (with stepped entry) and has a steep drop about two thirds of the way towards the hot tub - kids are welcome to use both with adult supervision. When they’re ready to explore the area, it’s 10 minutes’ drive to the nearby Reptile Zoo; 10 minutes from the sandy beaches; less than half an hour from Disneyland California; an hour south to Legoland and an hour north to Los Angeles for the studio tours.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights. Guests will have access to the whole house. There is a backhouse studio that will be empty and locked during your stay unless otherwise agreed (it is currently under renovation and not included in the bedroom count or photos). This is the host’s primary residence, so drawers and closets will be full but a garment rack will be provided in each room. Sorry - absolutely no pets allowed due to severe allergies, including service animals, because of the family's asthmatic members. Our home is a non-smoking home - smoking is only permitted in the backyard designated area. While cannabis is legal in California, they do not allow cannabis smoking or vaping inside OR OUTSIDE of the house. If you would like to imbibe they recommend procuring legal THC tinctures or edibles. The hosts do not permit cannabis delivery service drop-offs to the house, so please visit one of the many legal dispensaries to browse or pick-up online orders in person. The house comes with bath towels, pool towels, and robes. If you use the pool towels, please wash and dry them before you check out. All other soiled linens (sheets, bath towels, robes) can be left in the downstairs hallway.

About the Location

This residence is located in a safe, quiet, mid-century suburb in Costa Mesa, the ‘city of the arts’ in coastal Orange County, California. The nearby town is full of great foodie restaurants with outdoor patios, as well as 2 green parks within half an hour’s walk. It’s also walking distance from a fantastic farmer's market and there are plenty of gorgeous hiking spots in the local area (as well as world-class shopping if that's your thing). It’s 5 miles from the beach (10 minutes’ drive to both Huntington Beach and Newport Beach) where you can learn to surf, rent boats, kayaks and paddleboards, or simply lounge on the golden sands. Downtown LA (1 hour away) offers world-famous tourist spots like the Walk of Fame and the Hollywood Sign. The house is 15 minutes’ drive from the Orange County airport, 20 miles from the Long Beach airport, and 45 miles from Los Angeles LAX international airport (just under an hour away). There is plenty of street parking as well as 2 driveway spots.

Accommodation Details

This residence has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. The primary bedroom suite is upstairs and has a tv, a sitting area, a desk, a king bed, and an attached bathroom with two sinks, a shower, and a soaking tub. Bedroom #2 is also upstairs and has a full-sized sofabed, a desk, and a bathroom with two sinks and a tub/shower combo. Bedroom #3 is downstairs to the right and has a single bed and a desk. It has a shared bathroom across the hall with a tub/shower combo and one sink. Bedroom #4 is downstairs to the right at the end of the hall. It has a single bed and a loft bed above the closet (please take care that kids sleeping in the loft are old enough to climb in and out independently and safely). We recommend the loft bed for ages 6-14, but not for adults. This room also has a desk and shares a bathroom with bedroom #3. Bedroom #5 is downstairs to the left at the end of the hall. It has a full/twin bunk bed and a futon that folds into a twin bed. It has two desks and an attached bathroom with a shower and one sink. This room has a slider that opens to the pool. so please take great care with non-swimmers. The sliders will be equipped with alarms that are turned on for any stays involving children (but can be turned off at your own risk). Outside there are loungers around the pool and a terrace with an outdoor dining area. Please note that the house has central heating but not central air conditioning. There is a cooling breeze through the windows and sliding doors, as well as an attic fan in the hallway and AC mini-split units in the primary bedroom and second upstairs bedroom.

Style Notes

Modern beach house. This home is bright and open plan, with a mix of eclectic mid-century décor and vintage furniture, as well as pieces from West Elm and Room and Board. The house is full of original art pieces, instruments and books - perfect for creative and curious families. Each bedroom also has at least one desk, with another desk in the living room and a ‘classroom’ in the stair landing, creating a total of 8 desk workspaces in the house for at-home learning or remote working. The hosts are also eco-conscious - the house will be equipped with Public Goods shampoo, conditioner, and body wash for your stay, in refillable containers. Please leave these behind for us to clean and refill for the next guest. We love the quirky exposed ceiling beam in the living area, creating a slightly industrial touch, as well as the bohemian wall hangings and the contrasting sleek all-white kitchen.

Orange County, California

Mickey, Minnie and a whole lot more...

Orange County, California is known the world over for its citrus-growing climate, world-class beaches and unbeatable amusement parks including Knott’s Berry Farms. The only thing that makes it tricky for parents is deciding what to do: should you spend the day at the beach, building sandcastles, riding waves or eating in retro cafés, or the day in San Diego, checking out culture, museums and the city? The good news is that there’s plenty here for everyone: mom and dad can dine out in gourmet restaurants, teens can shop in outdoor malls and fresh air lovers can hike, bike, surf, ride and stand up paddleboard, just for starters.
