Perks for the Parents
This waterfront 3-bedroom Revolutionary cottage overlooking Peconic Bay was built in 1730, and is within walking distance of Orient’s charming village store, post office and beaches. It sleeps up to 6. It’s a great vacation home at any time of year with sun loungers on the waterside deck in the summer and 3 working fireplaces for snuggling up in the winter. The house has a full kitchen and family-sized dining area as well as Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a Tesla charger.
Why Kids Love it
This cottage has plenty of toys, books and costumes to play with. There’s a garden that surrounds the house that comes with lots of outdoor toys and bikes. The house is a short walk from Poquatuck Field that’s ideal for flying kites! Days spent with sand and sea are easy here with a wealth of lovely beaches to choose from including the local Truman beach and Orient Beach State Park (15 mins by car) that has 2 sea-themed playgrounds, kayak and canoe rental, picnic tables and BBQs.
Things to Know
Minimum stay: 5 nights in the off season; monthly rentals given preference during the summer. There are stair gates for the top and bottom of the staircase. It being an old house, the stairs are very narrow, but there is a handrail and they pose no problem to the hosts’ young children. Children should take care on the upper porch. The children’s beds are suitable for age 3 and up. There are fireplace guards for all of the working fireplaces. Strollers, a high chair and baby equipment are provided. There is central air conditioning upstairs and fans on the ground floor. To park at the local beaches you need permits, available from Southold Town. Bay access is right outside the house, where you can swim or paddle board but do take note of the boat traffic from the nearby yacht club. The neighborhood is safe with lots of families with young children, but children should be supervised outside as the house sits on the water and there is car traffic on the road.
About the Location
This residence is located in the village of Orient overlooking Peconic Bay, North Fork, Long Island, NY. Orient is just over 100 miles and about a 2-hour, 20 mins drive from New York City. It has some of the best beaches on the North Fork (parking is by permits that can be obtained from Southold Town). As well as the famous shoreline there are plenty of vineyards to explore and farm stands to enjoy. Local curiosities include the camera obscura at Mitchell Park, Greenport and the etchings at Bear Rock Studio at Orient Point.
Accommodation Details
This historic house has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms on 2 stories. Style Notes
Historic, warm and cozy. This gorgeous cottage that is nearly 300 years old has plenty of original features to enjoy such as the wood-beamed ceilings, period windows and large open fireplaces. There are wooden counters in the kitchen and wide plank floors. The bedrooms are comfortable and the master bedroom has a romantic four-poster bed. We love the wealth of history in this vacation home, the antique furniture dotted throughout, as well as the lovely top deck where you can relax and take in the stunning views of the Bay.
Orient, North Fork
Sleepy beaches and pick-your-own
An old fishing community with seamen’s cottages, Orient is implausibly pretty. Spot herons and egrets on the quiet beaches of the State Park, which serves families well with barbecue grills, playgrounds and picnic tables. Or order ice-cream sundaes to go, and island-hop – Shelter Island, Sag Harbor and East Hampton are the main ones to tick off.
