Perks for the Parents

This apartment in a former school building has plenty of of space to play and relax, with two balconies, a large kitchen-lounge and a kids room with loft-style bed. Designed for families, there is a big kitchen and dining area and a special kids play area with tons of toys. The bathroom has a shower and a bath. Along with a bedroom for parents and children, there is a single bedroom ideal for an au pair, nanny or older child. There is a spacious balcony with a dining area and a rooftop terrace.

Why Kids Love it

There are tons of toys: Lego, dolls, cars, books, games, bikes, steps, crafting and lots of superheroes too. Most of all, kids like the space: they can run around, make noise, and even play football on the roof terrace. The kids room is set up has ‘pirate-style’ loft bed. It’s a fun experience to sleep up high - but note that the stairs up to it are steep, and it is best for over 5s. A crib and travel crib can be added to the parents’ bedroom for younger children, and plenty of extra equipment for younger toddlers and babies is available.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 days (maximum 4 weeks). The house has a quirky set up: as part of an old school, it has 2 doors for entry, one on the first floor and another for the second floor. There are 4 internal staircases inside, all in a hallway with doors (and there are some stair gates). The whole house, roof terrace and balcony are private. There is a shared garden not accessible for guests. Note that the stairs to the mezzanine level in the kids bedroom are steep. Car rental not essential; great public transport links in the area make it easy to get around, and bike rental is easy and popular nearby. On street parking nearby is expensive.

About the Location

The apartment is in a central location in the Oud West of the city, near the canals. Vondelpark and Westerpark is around the corner, and at the end of the street there is a sweet small free splash pad. There are lots of playgrounds in the neighborhood, along with cute shops and restaurants. It's super easy for traveling and biking around the city. It is around 30 minutes’ drive from Schiphol Airport, and 20 minutes from Central Station by tram.

Accommodation Details

This 4-story city apartment is in a former 19th century schoolhouse and has a unique layout. Spread over 200 sqm, it includes 3 bedrooms, a spacious bathroom with shower and tub and a giant living room with mezzanine. It also has a balcony and a 60 sqm rooftop. The main floor has the large loft-style open plan living room with kitchen, dining table, couch and fireplace, plus large play area for kids and toilet. The room has a mezzanine area with a TV lounge. Above this, the roof terrace has a dining table. Below the main living space, there is a storage and washing floor, and all the bedrooms are on the floor beneath this, 1 with kingsize bed, 1 with double bed and 1 with a twin bed, along with a bathroom.

Style Notes

Modern living. This home is modern and stylish, with colors of white, black and a little bit of wood, plus super high ceilings due to its past as a school building. It is clean and very light and was fully remodelled to suit a family, with a special designed kitchen, and a fireplace with glass windows. The bedroom takes notes from boutique hotels and is dark and elegant. Bookshelves include art and architecture books, while leafy plants stretch their fronds out to the light from high shelves. We love the space and light, the large balcony and the unusual and unique lighting.

WOW! We just returned from a European tour to Amsterdam, Paris, Nimes (France), and Barcelona, and with the exception of Nimes, we used Kid&Coe the entire time. This was by far our favorite city and unit, and it far exceeded our expectations. First of all, this unit is AMAZING! If you like design and you like architecture, you will fall in love. It is organized in a way that encourages rest and family time, and it has both a terrace off the kitchen and a roof deck. Our 11-year-old daughter loved the loft bed and our 13-year-old son was content in his simple, sparse room. We were out and about most of the time, so we didn’t spend much time in the rooms. The main living area is just gorgeous, and our host left wine and a welcome food gift, as well as helpful information about the area. She was incredibly easy to communicate with and left us numbers of neighbors in case we needed them. We loved the neighborhood! There are multiple options for public transportation, and it is clearly a great spot for families. FoodHallen is right down the road (think Chelsea Market in NYC), which made dinner easy, and we loved the Sunday Breakfast Club for breakfast. We rented bikes right around the corner from the apartment, which made things easy, and we loved being right between the two large parks and many other sites. This is a hole-in-one if you are looking to stay in Amsterdam as a family with older children (not good for young kids due to layout and staircases, etc.).

Just perfect

Oud-West, Amsterdam

Handsome houses and street markets

This area of the city is 10-minutes to the east of downtown and is known for its handsome houses, busy shopping streets and street markets. It's close to the Vondelpark and is a great place for a family, with good restaurants and terraces for people-watching. It's also known for having the highest concentration of coffee bars in the city.
