Perks for the Parents

A classic Dutch family home in Leiden, The Netherlands, with a stylish open plan living space and cultural sights on your doorstep. It sleeps 6 + 1. This is a great family home to explore the best of the famous Dutch landscape: both kids and parents will love discovering Leiden’s historic architecture, museums and green spaces, either on foot or by bike. This child-friendly neighborhood has a choice of stores and eateries nearby for hassle-free dining, with the option of day trips to the beach (just 20 minutes away) or adventures in Amsterdam (45 minutes away).

Why Kids Love it

The house comes with all kinds of toys for children aged 3 to 10. This area is full of different parks, playgrounds and forests, all within 15 minutes’ walk: Leidse Hout park is less than 10 minutes’ walk, and has lots of green space to play, a lake, cafe and outdoor events. Visit the Hofbrouk area for a skate park, swimming pool and tennis courts, or wander over to the marina to watch the boats sail by and explore the nature reserves. On rainy days, take the kids to one of the area’s many child-friendly museums: the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, CORPUS (a giant tour through the human body), Rijksmuseum Boerhaave (science museum), and Space Expo - all less than half an hour away by bus or on foot.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights. The house is home to 2 child-friendly indoor/outdoor cats who will be on the premises during stays and require minimal care (mainly feeding). Safety notes: the hosts provide a fireplace guard and bed rail for younger children; little ones should be supervised on the stairs. This is a quiet residential neighborhood, so no parties or loud music please. Street parking is available outside the house - car hire is not strictly essential as public transport is efficient and reliable. The house comes with a housekeeping services, dishwasher, washer/dryer, TV, WiFi, Sonos speaker system, and DVD player. There are bikes for 2 adults and 3 children (age 3 - 5) (4 - 6) and (5 - 8).

This residence has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, set over 3 floors. The ground floor is open plan, with a fully-equipped kitchen, dining area and living area. Upstairs, there are 2 bedrooms on the middle floor (1 with a single bed that’s great for kids, and the master bedroom with a double bed), and 2 bedrooms on the top floor: a children’s room with 1 single bed and 1 more double room with a crib (these rooms have sloping ceilings). Outside there is an enclosed sunny garden with lots of space and shady areas, a bbq plus 2 dining tables (1 of which is covered) for al fresco family meals.

Style Notes

Cozy contemporary. The house is warm and welcoming yet modern and practical. Built in the 1930's, it features high ceilings and large spacious rooms, ideal for the whole family. All the bedrooms have wooden floors and the children’s rooms are decorated with playful colors and quirky artwork on the walls. The stunning open plan living space is flooded with light from dual aspect doors and windows, complemented by the sleek white kitchen. We love the mixed pattern rug in the living room, the wood paneled wall in the children’s bedroom, and the colorful bathroom tiles.

We are a family of 4. I am Gideon and my wife is called Sanne. We have two daughters, 6 and 9 years old. We have lived in Amsterdam until 2017. Then we moved to a more quiet place so the kids could have more outdoor playing time. That has been a great decision. We are really happy in Oegstgeest, the perfect place in the middle of the urban areas in the Netherlands. Of course the beach around the corner is the cherry on the cake!

Boulevards, bike paths and beaches

Beyond the city you’ll find wide boulevards and bike routes, large houses, gardens and plenty of play space – along with a canal or two at the bottom of the garden. The outskirts of Amsterdam are a great base for a Dutch adventure, giving you easy access to the rest of the country. Play on the surprisingly beautiful sandy beaches of the North Sea, cycle beside fields of tulips and windmills, or admire the stunning architecture of Rotterdam, Delft and Utrecht. Or simply daytrip into the city by tram, bus or train.
