This residence is the perfect destination for family and friends to spend a peaceful vacation: leave behind the hustle and bustle of everyday life and welcome the silence and calm at this mountain village retreat. Here you can be as laid-back or as active as you like - take a bike ride through the countryside to explore the nearby UNESCO park or visit some of the local historic cathedrals and museums. If you’re ready to relax, you can simply lounge by the pools while the kids play with the huge choice of games and activities on site.

Why Kids Love it

Kids of all ages will love exploring this huge vacation home, with 2.5 hectares of land to roam safely. It’s a great place to come if you have active kids or love spending time outdoors: on the site there is a 5-a-side soccer field, volleyball court, playground, ping-pong table, turnball, and outdoor tic-tac-toe game - not to mention the private swimming pools - and the hosts also have toys and games indoors for colder days. In the nearby Serra da Estrela park, older kids can try dry-slope skiing or snowboarding, as well as hiking, cycling, swimming in the lake and adventure activities such as zip-wires and tree-top rope climbs.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 1 night. Safety notes: the pools are not gated, and there are steps outside with no hand rail, so young children should be supervised at all times outdoors. Children should also be supervised if windows are open in the upper level bedrooms. The pool has shallow stairs and the depth is from 80 cm - 175cm. The bigger pool, surrounded by a wide lawn, is saltwater pool and is a bit deeper on both ends. There is an outdoor shower. There is no air conditioning, fans can be provided on request. The hosts have all-age bikes available for rent (including baby seats, for an additional fee). There is plenty of space for parking and car rental is essential as the area is very remote.

About the Location

The house is located in the village of Fornos de Algodres in the Guarda district of Portugal. It’s 1 hour 45 minutes’ drive from Porto airport (Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport). Fornos de Algodres is known for the production of Serra da Estrela cheese, one of Portugal’s most iconic cheeses - ask the hosts for where to visit the local cheese factories. It’s also located just at the foothills of Serra da Estrela, one of the global Geoparks noted by UNESCO, where there are castles, lakes, and waterfalls to explore. It’s 10 minutes’ drive into the village (for a choice of eateries and stores), and 5 minutes’ drive to the river beach and picnic area ‘Ponte de Juncais’ - a great place for outdoor swimming.

Accommodation Details

This residence has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. Upstairs, there are spacious living and dining areas with access to a small garden where the smaller pool and barbecue are located. The fully-equipped kitchen has all the appliances you’ll need, as well as a Nespresso coffee machine and juicer. On the upper floor are also 2 queen size bedrooms, both with en suite bathrooms (one of which has entries from both the bedroom itself and the hall). On the lower floor, there is a queen size ensuite bedroom and a bedroom with 2 single beds, along with a bathroom in the hall. The French doors in the lower level bedrooms open directly to a beautiful garden with no steps and are child safe. The hosts can also add cribs or accommodate extra guests on single sofa beds, on request. Outside, the house has a covered area with a wooden deck, barbecue, dining table seating 10, and stone open air fireplace for cooler nights.

Rural contemporary. Designed by civil engineer Rui Miguel Santos and interior designer Ana Sofia Silva, the house brings modernity to a rural location, blending naturally with the surrounding green valleys and mountains. The home has been designed with comfort and functionality in mind, with light flooding in from wide, low windows to draw in the beautiful views and create a relaxing environment indoors. We love the sleek and smart modern kitchen, the luxurious marble finishes in the bathrooms, and the natural woods used on the beds, which creates a rustic yet contemporary look. Double pools put this house further into a category of its own.

Payment policy
When a host accepts your booking, we will automatically charge your card 30% of the total cost of the stay on acceptance if the check in date is more than 6 weeks away. We will send you a balance payment reminder at 6 weeks before check in and you will be required to submit your payment to finalise your reservation. If a host accepts your booking and the check in date is 6 weeks away or less, we will charge your card 100% of the total cost of the stay on acceptance.
Cancellation policy
For cancellations notified up to 6 weeks before the check in date, guests will receive a refund of any amount paid less 10% of the total cost of the booking. For cancellations notified at 6 weeks or less before the check in date, no refunds are given unless the host agrees. If a host does agree to a full or partial refund, this amount will be returned to the guest less 10% of the total cost of the booking. Some hosts will also allow a stay to be rescheduled. Guests should contact their host for further information regarding any request to change the dates of a stay.
