Perks for the Parents

This rural retreat in Silvignano, just outside Perugia, has a private swimming pool, olive grove, and medieval history. It sleeps 8. This house is perfectly set up for families, with an open plan diner space for family meals and multiple dining areas outdoors. The garden room is a great place for tired parents to relax - it features floor-to-ceiling windows where you can watch the sun set over the beautiful hills and nearby vineyards (and a wood burner so it can be used all year round). Step out into the pretty pergola which is adorned with beautiful outdoor lights, take a dip in the swimming pool, sunbathe on the patio, or wander into the olive grove (with 50 olive trees) where you can collect wild asparagus and garlic when in season.

Why Kids Love it

This is the perfect vacation home for families who want to relax and have fun at home - the hosts have 5 children. Children of all ages will love the 50ft long swimming pool (which has a maximum depth of 5ft) and hosts provide pool toys to use during your stay. There’s also buckets and spades for the beach if you fancy a day trip to the Adriatic coast (around 2 hours’ drive). The whole family will enjoy an off-road bicycle ride on the safe child-friendly track which runs from Spoleto to Assisi (25 miles long) and this area also offers white-water rafting in the nearby Valnerina, around 45 minutes from the house. Kids will love to dine out here too - families are welcome in restaurants and it’s easy to please fussy eaters with the world’s best pasta, pizza, and gelato.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights. Safety notes: the house has a roof terrace and multiple balconies and high terraces (although most areas are fenced), so young children should be supervised at all times outdoors. The pool is in a separate gated area, but it’s built into sloped land so please take care with little ones on the far side of the water. There are lots of steps, inside and outside, so toddlers or those less mobile may need additional help to get around. The swimming pool is open from June 1st to September 30th. Please note there is no bathtub. There is space to park 2 cars - car rental is essential to explore the area. The upstairs bedrooms have air conditioning; the downstairs rooms have ceiling fans.

About the Location

This residence is located in rural Silvignano, 50 minutes’ drive outside Perugia in Italy. Umbria is known as the ‘green belt’ of Italy - the perfect place for hiking, cycling, and sightseeing along beautiful mountains, vineyards, and lakes. The town of Campello Sul Clitunno (less than 10 minutes’ drive) has bars, restaurants, and a park with natural springs, while Trevi (20 minutes’ drive north) has a bike hire center and outdoor water park. Spoleto (20 minutes’ drive) offers a fast train service to Rome (1 hour 20 minutes) where the family can visit some of the world’s most famous sights, including The Colosseum, Vatican City, and the Trevi Fountain. Perugia airport is around 40 minutes’ drive.

Accommodation Details

This residence has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. Upstairs, there is a large living room running the full length of the house, which opens up onto a beautiful newly-built roof terrace with amazing views over the rolling hills of olive groves and vineyards. Also on this level is a wet room and 2 bedrooms: a guest room (which can be made up as a double or 2 singles) and a children’s bedroom with 2 sets of bunk beds. The 2 levels are connected by a bespoke metal staircase. Downstairs, there is a garden room with sliding glass panels giving way to spectacular views, 2 large sofas and a dining table. The contemporary kitchen diner is equipped with locally-sourced dinnerware and serving dishes, Moka pot and Nespresso machine, and features a large dining table (seating 8). A small lobby leads to the primary bedroom, which has a kingsize bed and French doors opening out to the garden, plus an ensuite shower room. Additional guests can also stay on the double sofabed in the lounge.

Style Notes

Old meets new. This medieval farmhouse is packed with beautiful historic features, but the hosts (who have a background in interior design) have carefully renovated the property to create a stylish and contemporary home. Light and colorful, the space is decorated with bright accessories, limited-edition prints on the walls, and unique modern furniture in the bedrooms to make it a family-friendly, welcoming environment. Parents will love the luxurious details: all the soft furnishings are from Designers Guild, with handmade curtains from Montefalco and bed linen and towels from either the White Company or Ralph Lauren. We love the huge stone fireplace in the living room, the rainbow-colored woven circular garden chairs on the roof terrace, and the unique historic archway which frames the kitchen diner, juxtaposed with the contemporary floating staircase.

My wife and I have owned Ventinove since 2014 and have completely renovated the property in the last 2 years including the building of a 15m by 4m pool within our very own olive grove. We love the people, food and culture in this part of Italy and feel truly blessed to be part of the community in our local village of Silvignano
