Portland, Oregon
gorges, galoshes and rose bushes
Located in the Pacific Northwest, Portland has the lockdown on alternative cool. Its rainy season seems to go on for months, but the drizzly days bring azaleas once spring rolls around. And those downpours give you an excuse to while away hours at the Portland Children’s Museum. When the sun comes out, order a scoop at one of the gourmet ice cream shops or splash in a fountain. Public transportation makes it a cinch to zip between neighborhoods, though you’ll need a car to get to prime hiking spots. Head outside of the city to marvel at waterfalls and pick fruit at Sauvie Island Farms.
