Perks for the Parents

Retreat to this recently renovated country house set in 7 secluded acres of woodland in Milan, just minutes from Rhinebeck and Red Hook. It comfortably sleeps 10 (plus travel crib). This home is perfect for families, with a huge kitchen for prepping meals, a sunlit dining room that seats 10 or a back deck with a full dining table if you prefer to sit outside. There are lots of spaces to relax and have your own privacy, as well as an at-home gym to work out during your stay (and a dedicated play room downstairs to entertain the kids while you do it!)

Why Kids Love it

The house is full of kids’ books, toys and crafts, as well as a huge TV for movie time. There’s a fully furnished basement play area and outside there’s acres of land to explore, including a massive backyard with rope swing and an awesome trampoline for the kids (and adults)! For babies and toddlers, the host can supply a pack-and-play and highchair on request. For older kids, the living room has a lovely piano they can play and there’s ton to explore outside too. It’s a short drive east to Wilcox Park and the playgrounds in Rhinebeck is 10 minutes’ drive, also near the Dutchess County Fairground and a wonderful performing arts theater.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 week minimum, inquire for shorter stays. There is a 3-car garage and a separate building that’s been kitted out as a gym with weights, a Concept2 rowing machine, TRX, yoga mats, and a boxing bag. The house is up a long driveway and secluded. In the winter, 4 wheel drive is recommended. Garbage pickup will be an added charge collected by the hosts at the end of a stay based on usage. Sorry – no pets please. The international airports of New York City are around 2 hours away and there is an Amtrak train station in Rhinecliff (15 minutes’ drive).

About the Location

The house is located in Milan, a quiet town less than 2 hours from New York City. It’s just a quick drive to from all the restaurants and shops in Rhinebeck and Red Hook, and an easy drive to Kingston, Hudson and various towns in the Catskills. There’s so much to do in the area, including visiting farmer’s markets, art galleries, small shops, delicious farm-to-table restaurants and of course, so many of the Hudson Valley’s natural features to explore – including hiking trails, biking routes and outdoor swimming spots. The host is happy to share recommendations!

Accommodation Details

The house has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, set over 2 floors and a fully finished basement. On the first floor you’ll find a charming living room with a fireplace, a sunny second common room with a beautiful piano, an Adirondack-themed bedroom, a large renovated kitchen with an informal breakfast bar, as well as a formal dining room with impressive natural light. Upstairs is a luxurious primary bedroom with a king bed and ensuite bathroom with soaking tub, two guest bedrooms (with queen beds) sharing a full bathroom, and a spacious sunlit reading room to snuggle up with a book. The basement contains a media room with a massive couch and TV, a full bathroom and a play area for kids (with toys, crafts and puzzles). A 16’ x 15’ rear deck with a propane grill is the perfect place to view the spectacular grounds.

Style Notes

Country charm. Equal parts cozy and comfortable, this a retreat designed to disconnect and recharge. The house is a gorgeous pos-and-beam design that gets sunlight from all directions and a modern house with a mix of farmhouse and mid-century modern touches. Several couches throughout the common rooms are just perfect for lazing with a book, while the kitchen was recently renovated with new appliances, brightly colored cabinetry and spacious Caesarstone countertops. We love the grand entrance, rustic wood bed frames and the beautiful exposed structural beams.

Red Hook NY, Hudson Valley

Countryside, food and culture

This pretty Hudson Valley town, adjacent to Rhinebeck, is known for its food and cultural scene. You can be alone in the woods, splashing in swimming holes and hiking state parks in the morning then exploring the village’s foodie stores and stops in the afternoon. Pies and farm-fresh foods are the order of the day; picking strawberries, peas and asparagus at Grieg Farm is a local tradition, and its Sunday farmer’s market is worth a visit too.
