Perks for the Parents

This historic family home on the Russian River, with kayaks to borrow and a cute kids room, is also wheelchair accessible. It sleeps 7 + 1. This is a great set up for families, with an open-plan kitchen/living/dining area creating an easy flow, inside and out. From dining and grilling on the deck to getting cozy by the fire you can relax while keeping an eye on the kids. And since the downstairs is wheelchair accessible, it works for grandparents or those with mobility requirements. Perfect in summer for families seeking a private riverfront home in wine country, it’s also superb in fall and winter (with a wood-burning stove, hot tub, heating, and great views to enjoy). The area is perfect for parents in need of a little relaxation: the valley is famous for its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, and it’s close to the Dry Creek, Sonoma, Alexander and Napa valleys, which are all great spots for wine tasting or vineyard visits.

Why Kids Love it

This is the perfect place for kids who love the outdoors. It’s located right on the river, and boasts a private dock where kids can jump straight into the water for wild swimming! It’s also equipped with kayaks and floating boats, as well as life jackets sized from infant to XXL. The giant lawn is perfect for frisbee, croquet, boules, or just running around. The kids room has a trundle bed for siblings, friends or cousins to share, and the hosts can also provide a pack-n-play crib if children want to stay together. As a fun extra, the outdoor shower (with hot and cold water!) is a treat for the whole family year-round, so little ones can enjoy rinsing off under the wide open sky. Gather the kids around the deck at night for some serious star-gazing.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 31 nights. Safety notes: the downstairs is wheelchair accessible and there is 1 electric lift armchair for anyone who needs assistance. There is an open deck and dock, so toddlers should be supervised at all times when outside. Parking is available and car rental is recommended. The hosts also have kayaks and floating boats available for guests to use during their stay. There are 2 adult-size bikes in good working order. The house comes with a hot tub, air conditioning, washer/dryer, WiFi, TV, DVD player and DVD library. Ask the hosts about housekeeping services for your visit. It’s around 1.5 - 2 hours from San Francisco airport.

About the Location

This residence is located on the banks of the fabled Russian River in Sonoma County, California. This is a peaceful, rural area surrounded by wild nature - ospreys and eagles soar, blue herons fish and families can enjoy the water. It’s steps from the Northwood Golf Course which was designed by Alister MacKenzie (famous for his designs of Augusta National, Pasatiempo and Cypress Point). There’s also a full-service restaurant and the post office at Northwood. Farm-to-table restaurants, local markets, hot springs and excellent arts and crafts dot the region. And world-famous Osmosis Day Spa, with the only cedar baths in the United States, is just minutes away offering full-service spa days. The Pacific Coast is just 15 minutes’ drive (the Russian River flows out to the coast at Jenner), with San Francisco city around 1.5 hours away.

Accommodation Details

The house has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. This is a unique original brick home built 100 years ago and renovated in 2020/21 with all modern amenities. The entire downstairs — which includes kitchen, living room, kingsize bedroom and bathroom with a roll-in shower — is wheelchair accessible. Upstairs, there’s a beautiful wood-panelled primary bedoom with a California kingsize bed and a living area with a TV. The final bedroom is ideal for kids or an au pair, with 3 single beds (1 of which is a trundle under a day bed). The hosts also have a pack-and-play/travel crib available on request. Outside, there is a huge back deck with loads of outdoor seating, a hot tub, and an outdoor shower. In front there’s a brick patio under the redwoods with a chaise for forest bathing.

Style Notes

Characterful lake house. The hosts have renovated this historic 1928 Korbel family home to include modern amenities for a comfortable stay. Originally built from beautiful brick and redwood, the restoration enhances its character while adding modern touches: think glowing sconces and dimmable lighting, and an extensive, sleek kitchen with granite counters and a cocktail prep sink. On viewing the wooden beams in the living room ceiling and a cedar-lined primary bedroom, you know you’re in the Russian River, but at the flick of a switch you can also have top-notch AC and heating, flat-screen TVs and brand-new bathrooms in easy tile. We love the unique curved wall porch, the exposed brick fireplace and those spectacular multi-aspect windows in the kitchen.

We built/renovated and outfitted our homes for our family, and the kids have grown up in them. We also enjoy exploring the rest of the world. Other favorite places include Sardinia and Kauai.

Russian River, Sonoma

Redwoods, vineyards and river beaches

In northern California, close to Sonoma’s beaches and famed for its wineries, Russian River is a fantastic spot for an active family break. Hike in the forest on the Armstrong Redwoods trail to discover trees over 1,400 years old; play in the river at Johnson’s Beach where the shallow water is perfect for younger kids, or take a trip to the Sonoma Coast state park to go whale watching or play on ocean beaches.
