Perks for the Parents

Head to a hideout in the trees near the Russian River, California where kids can paddle in the creek and parents can relax in the peaceful hot tub. It sleeps 5. This is the perfect place to relax and get back to nature. It’s a quiet, private home surrounded by trees with easy access to the small local town as well as the west coast beaches and fantastic local vineyards and wineries - there are at least 5 within just 20 minutes’ drive and a handful more as you head towards Sabastopol (half an hour away). Once the kids are in bed, spend your evenings with a sample of the local wines as you enjoy the quiet sounds of the forest from your hot tub.

Why Kids Love it

The downstairs living space works well as a playroom, with a swing chair and cozy bean bag. Older kids can enjoy the hot tub too, or play out in the large natural backyard where there’s plenty of space to climb trees or build forts. The house is right by a creek, where kids can paddle or splash around in summer. They’ll also love playing down at the Russian River beach nearby, as well as in the town’s skate park and recreation areas. Sonoma Zipline Adventure park is 5 minutes’ drive, and the beach is less than half an hour away.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 31 nights. Safety note: there are stairs in the property, but no stair gates, so young children should be supervised. There is no TV at this property. Kids under 6 year old are not allowed in the hot tub. Please don’t stay out on the deck after 10pm at night to respect neighbors. There is space to park 2 cars and car rental is essential to get around in this remote area.

About the Location

The house is located in a rural area full of trees in the little town of Monte Rio in California. Nearby, there’s a coffee shop offering Israeli food right next to a great outdoor skate park (just 3 minutes’ drive) and Monte Rio itself has parks, cafes and stores, as well as a public beach along the Russian River (5 minutes’ drive). It’s close to Guerneville and Occidental for great restaurants (10 minutes’ drive) as well as Jenner and the Sonoma Coast State Park (less than 20 minutes’ drive) where you’ll find miles of hiking trails and beaches to explore. Sonoma and Napa are 1 hour away; San Francisco airport is just under 2 hours’ drive.

Style Notes

Nordic nature. Nestled amongst the trees, this private house features lots of natural wood materials and simple monochrome tones to create a chic, Nordic-inspired look. The plentiful windows and high ceilings create lots of light, while the black exterior blends into the natural surroundings. We love the contemporary furniture in the upstairs living space, the sleek black kitchen color palette and the exposed timber beams in the downstairs living room.

Hi! My name is Shevi and I live with my husband and two kids in San Francisco. I love traveling and design, and I'm hosting tourists for several years now in several modern houses I designed. I love giving people the perfect vacation and design experience! My kids love the house. My daughter Noa is 11. She is a dancer and the tree house was actually her idea. My son Ori is 15 and he is a musician. We travel a lot together. Some of our favorite destinations are: Italy, Japan, Alaska, Costa Rica, Mexico and Tel Aviv (where we originally from).

Russian River, Sonoma

Redwoods, vineyards and river beaches

In northern California, close to Sonoma’s beaches and famed for its wineries, Russian River is a fantastic spot for an active family break. Hike in the forest on the Armstrong Redwoods trail to discover trees over 1,400 years old; play in the river at Johnson’s Beach where the shallow water is perfect for younger kids, or take a trip to the Sonoma Coast state park to go whale watching or play on ocean beaches.
