Perks for the Parents

This rustic and romantic Tuscan apartment in a family estate has a shared pool and is well placed for exploring hilltop towns, relaxing in hammocks and enjoying local food. Close to Castellina in Chianti, it is run by owners who know what it’s like to travel with kids, and who help as much as they can. Cookery classes and tour guides/drivers for local attractions and wineries are within easy reach. All guests are sent a copy of The Big Book – a detailed guide to your vacation in Tuscany. The estate has an honesty bar with a selection of local wines, soft drinks, spirits and mixers as well as a host of guide books, maps, games and children’s'/adults books.

Why Kids Love it

Kids love this place as they have so much space and freedom. Wi-Fi is available everywhere (mostly) but kids are encouraged to play outdoors and create their own adventures. During the summer months, there are usually other families to hang out with (including the owners’ occasionally) allowing families to make friends. The summer sees a surge in events around the region, including dressing up in armour, watching horse and donkey races, falconry, jousting, medieval style football and much more. The owners can provide cribs, high chairs, tonnes of toys and books, potty and baby bath and of course, there is a swimming pool.

Things to Know

Minimum stay is 4 nights in low season and 5 nights in high. Note that while the shared swimming pool is currently ungated, it is a 50 m walk from the main property. The apartment is on a working olive farm and therefore has some dangerous machinery around. The hosts provide a full guided tour showing you all the safe and off limit areas but young children should be supervised at all times. They provide a laundry service but note that there are no machines in the apartments. The apartment is one of a small collection in the olive grove. The closest restaurant is 5 minutes away and within a half hour radius, there are hundreds of excellent restaurants to choose from, all child friendly.

About the Location

Patrignone is a tranquil haven where the parents can relax and enjoy the atmosphere whilst kids can explore and adventure. It is 40 minutes from both Siena and Florence. The closest town, Castellina in Chianti, is a 10-minute drive away. The property is on the doorstep of many beautiful places to visit including San Gimignano and Panzano. The closest airport is Florence (45 minutes) and it is only 1.2-1.5 hours from Pisa and Bologna. Rome and Milan are around a 3-3.5 hour drive. There is a stunning sculpture garden not too far away and you can be at the beach within an hour and a half.

Accommodation Details

This apartment, La Terrazza, is one of 3 2-bedroom apartments at Podere Patrignone. This apartment is a 1-story ground floor self-contained apartment with 1 double and 1 single bed in 1 large ensuite room and 3 single beds in the other. There is a separate large kitchen and living area plus bathroom with shower. There is a huge garden and a communal terrace, swimming pool and a kids area in the woods with table tennis, trampoline, tree house, basketball hoop and swing.

Style Notes

Tuscan charm. The property is a 15th century traditional Tuscan farmhouse with many original features, character and charm in abundance. This apartment is in, the owners believe, the oldest part of the building and is cool in the summer months. It is spacious and elegantly decorated with some beautiful pieces of antique Florentine furniture and a stunning family-made Tiffany lamp. We love the bucolic feel, the traditional terracotta tiled floor and the fantastic pool.

Simon has been running the business remotely with the help of his permanent staff, who, unfortunately, don't speak English very well. He also spends around half the summer in Tuscany, so if it's vital that there is someone English-speaking there to welcome you, please let us know, and Simon will try to be there when you arrive.

We had a wonderful stay at this property. The pool is beautifully located with amazing Tuscan views. The apartment is cosy and authentic. The hosts were really friendly and welcoming. Finally the location is wonderful with access to many small hilltop villages and also close to San Guimignano and Siena. We would thoroughly recommend staying here.

We had a wonderful stay at The Terrazza Residence. The views and sunsets were breathtaking and our boys (6 and 4) loved all the amenities for kids--the treehouse, ping pong table, basketball court, the pool, the trampoline, etc. We loved the family dinner (which was delicious), hanging out with Simon/Verity/the other guests and the babysitting services so we could enjoy the wonderful restaurants in the neighborhood. The apartment was nice as well and Verity/Simon had filled it up with all the necessities for breakfast before we arrived. Thank you to the hosts and their boys for a wonderful visit.

Verity, Simon and their two wonderful sons were dream hosts. Amazingly helpful for any request and made us feel absolutely welcome. Verity is an outstanding chef so we highly recommend booking one of her private dinners and eating and drinking all the Chianti and olive oil they make on-site. The rooms are lushly decorated in classic style and the grounds are beautiful. The toys and outdoor space is more set-up for slightly older children who need less supervision (5+) but otherwise perfect for watched toddlers. This is less a comment about their homes, but most of Tuscany. Super delicious restaurants and small villages in short driving distance as well that the hosts can easily recommend.
