Perks for the Parents

Nestled in an avocado orchard, Sweet Shade Farm is a newly built house in a beautiful spot with views of rolling hills, a pool, sauna, hot tub and plenty to keep the kids outside and happy. It sleeps up to 10. The weather here is comfortable all year round so most guests want to be outside as much as possible. Indeed, there’s every reason to here, surrounded by orchards and nature. Watch a movie on the outdoor TV with an owl or hawk flying overhead, kick back in the sauna or power up the gas BBQ for a family feast in style.

Why Kids Love it

There is always a place to play inside or outside here with lots of dirt to dig in, forts to build and trees to climb. Tend the small veggie garden and pull produce for dinner. Splash in the pool, play ball games on the lawn and jump on the trampoline. Kids will also discover and love the boxes of Legos, children's books, ping pong table and football table. In the living room there’s a secret day bed above the piano for kids to read a book or escape from everyone else. The kids’ room is fabulous with a home-made bunk sleeping 6 and their own outdoor space.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 14 nights for exchanges. The residence is a homeowner association (HOA) with 11 other parcels and shares a communal gate to enter. Tenants live in a cottage close by. There is no air conditioning because it’s not needed in the Santa Barbara climate, and the ocean breezes maintain a constant air flow. The 2nd story wall facing the mountains is a garage door that can be opened completely to allow for the whole house to cool off when needed.

About the Location

The house is in Montecito in Santa Barbara County, California, a 5 minute bike ride to a local beach with kid-friendly waves. It’s also a 5-minute walk to an oak woodland preserve with a pretty creek and trail to the mountains. The lower village with restaurants and shops is 2 miles away, and the larger downtown area is a short 5 miles drive. Santa Barbara is about a 13 minute drive from Montecito and offers up market boutiques and restaurants, beaches, a Natural History Museum and the zoo. International flights land at Los Angeles, 1 hr, 45 mins drive away. We recommend use of a car to get around and enjoy the location.

Accommodation Details

Sweet Shade Farm has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms on 2 floors. The floor plan is open with inviting communal areas including a fully stocked kitchen and living room, surrounded by private bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, as well as a guest bathroom. The primary kingsize bedroom has a mountain view and its own bathroom with shower and bath tub. Upstairs is the 2nd living room and 2 bedrooms. The kids’ bedroom has its own balcony and 2 bunk beds with twin /singles over full /doubles, sleeping 6. The other bedroom is queensize. Outside there is a large, shaded lawn with a trampoline, lots of avocado and lemon trees and a recently added pool and sauna.

Style Notes

Bold and beautiful. The design of Sweet Shade Farm is inspired by hay barns and farm buildings with natural materials and locally crafted elements such as tiles, stonework and metalwork. Stay here and you’ll enjoy expansive interiors with big views in the day and cozy nights. The house is full of natural light provided by large doors and windows ideally kept open during the day to take advantage of Santa Barbara's temperate climate and fresh breezes. The siding, beams, rafter, and joists are all reclaimed wood, and the 1st floor is wood-framed and adobe brick, with the adobe made on site. We love the handcrafted tiles, the open layout and the unrivalled outdoor space.

We are a family of 4 who love to travel! We love exploring by bike, playing soccer and cooking! We live on an organic avocado farm, and are a farmer and landscape architect. Our two boys are 14 and 9. We love our home and farm, but are eager to explore other communities and ways of life during the summer when school is out.

Santa Barbara, California

Wine country, palm-fringed beaches and family fun

On the central Californian coast, Santa Barbara brings together wine country, sandy beaches and family attractions to create a fantastic family vacation destination. From the palm-fringed beaches to the shark-touching tank at the Museum of Natural History Sea Center, the beach cafés and lush parks, not to mention the small but perfectly formed zoo, Santa Barbara caters for families exceptionally well. Active kids will love sea kayaking, hiking trails in state parks and bike rides along Cabrillo Boulevard. It’s what beach cruisers were made for.

Our stay at The Sweet Shade Farm was so special-a real standout experience. The house is spacious and airy in the day with an ocean breeze on one side and a mountain view on the other. And as the sun sets it transforms into a cozy and comfortable retreat where you can play piano and sit around the fire. Great kitchen to cook in, pool area to relax, and lots of places to sleep. The Eilers were wonderful communicators and lovely guests in our home. We'd stay or sway again in a heart beat.
