Perks for the Parents

This warm and comfortable Californian retreat in the hills, 20 minutes from Santa Cruz, has a Great Room for gathering to connect with family and friends and plenty to keep the kids happy. It sleeps up to 9. The master bedroom has a large soaking tub (that fits 2) and a large, open shower. The kitchen has just about any utensil you will need to cook with (Vitamix blender, sous vide, gas grill and more). You will awaken to song birds every morning and see the occasional red-shouldered hawk cruising about. This house has an amazing view of the sky where you can star gaze by the outdoor fire pit on the giant patio.

Why Kids Love it

Kids will love the space here and there’s plenty just for them. There’s a giant swing under the oaks, a springless trampoline, chickens, an outdoor cat who is as friendly as can be, woodlands to explore, corn hole, ping pong, frisbee golf, loads of board games, a garden where they can pick their own berries and veggies, and lots of land and sunshine to play in. The hosts provide binoculars for bird watching too. There’s hiking on the doorstep and the beaches are a short drive away. You’ll be just over 10 minutes from The Mystery Spot, a popular tourist spot where strange things happen including balls mysteriously rolling uphill.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights. There is a main house and a separate 1-bedroom unit. Safety notes: outside there is a staircase that leads to a giant oak tree without a handrail and some drop-offs. A staircase in the house that leads to the second floor is not gated but has a handrail. There are several acres of fenced yard but there are animals around. The hosts like to keep their kids close to home at dusk – they’ve never had a problem before, but just in case. Please note that the terrain is hilly and hiking boots are recommended for exploring.

About the Location

Located just outside Soquel in the Santa Cruz Mountains, this residence is peaceful and remote, yet only 10 minutes from a Whole Foods / Trader Joes. It’s about 35 minutes from San Jose Airport and a little over an hour from San Francisco International (SFO). You’ll need a car once you're here to get around and enjoy the area. The beach is about 15 minutes’ drive away and there is hiking all around the area, including some trails in the back yard. There is plenty of parking.

Accommodation Details

Surrounding the house is a large 3000 square foot patio that is accessible from all of the downstairs rooms and there is a deck off of the bedrooms upstairs, which allows access to the outdoors from most all rooms in the house. Upstairs is a master king bedroom with bathroom featuring a large open shower and generous tub that fits 2 adults. There are 2 further queensize bedrooms and bathroom with a walk-in shower and toilet with heated seat/washlet. The main house also has a large Great Room / kitchen / diner with a table seating up to 6, an additional powder room plus a separate TV room. In an attached but separate unit is The Tiny House with a sitting area, queen-sized murphy bed, bathroom with walk-in shower and a kitchenette. A blow-up mattress in the TV room sleeps an additional guest if required. There are 17 acres outside including woods with hammocks and a vegetable garden.

Style Notes

Warm, welcoming, clean, simple and surrounded by nature. The owners designed and built this family home and it’s infused with their passion. The custom kitchen has a built-in fridge / freezer, patchworked elm cabinet faces and rolled steel pulls. There is oak flooring throughout while unique art pieces pepper the walls. We love the Great Room with its cosy sofas and sociably spacious kitchen; the huge patio that is strewn with lights and built for entertaining with outside dining, loungers and sun umbrellas; and the permaculture garden that brings every kind of butterfly and bee and makes you feel as if you’re in the Garden of Eden.

Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County

Butterflies, beaches and the boardwalk

A hundred thousand Monarch butterflies can’t be wrong: Santa Cruz is one stop on the butterfly migration route and is one of California’s most unmissable beach towns. With a family focus at the boardwalk amusement park (California’s oldest, in fact), plus marine museums, whale watching in season and surf beaches, there is more than enough to keep you occupied for a week or more. Don’t miss cookies and ice cream on Pacific Avenue.
