Perks for the Parents

This quirky, rustic hideaway, set on its own 33 acres of land between Woodstock and Saugerties, has large open concept living areas, a separate yurt, wood-fired sauna, private lake and secret island. It sleeps up to 15, with up to 2-3 families in the house and 1 in the yurt. Parents will appreciate the stylish and spacious primary bedroom with a separate bathroom with a steam bath. Outside there is plenty to keep you occupied with a roof top terrace in the tree canopy for your morning meditation, and a wood-fired sauna built into the hill next to your own private lake with island (accessible only by raft or a swim).

Why Kids Love it

Any kids you bring here will be free-range and happy by the end of the stay with a soccer field, the forest, the lake and an island to conquer. The owners say this is ‘kid heaven’. It’s mystical and whimsical with wild forestry in all directions where lots of wild and wonderful creatures live. Kids of all ages will love the rustic, down-to-earth vibe here where they can be free, and the home movie theater set-up with a double sided screen that can be watched from the kitchen and living room. The kids’ room is fun and 4 of them can be together with the 2 twins and a bunk bed for smaller ones who are old enough to climb safely.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights. Discounts are offered for month long stays. There are acres of land for kids to run around on but younger children in particular will need some supervision, most importantly near the lake where there is direct access. Non-swimmers need to be with adults and wear armbands / swimmies when close to the water. There are no stair gates in the house, but guests are welcome to bring their own.

About the Location

This residence is located in the Catskills between the charming towns of Woodstock and Saugerties. Restaurants are plentiful and within 15 minutes’ from the house in either town, as are shops and cultural destinations. Saugerties has the Catskills Animal Sanctuary and a historic lighthouse built in 1869 that you can access during low tide. Also close by are great hikes including Overlook Tower and Sloan Gorge. Skiing at Belleayre or Hunter Mountain is 30 minutes away and Windham is just over 40 minutes, all areas have resorts and restaurants to enjoy after hitting the slopes. Hudson and Kingston and all they have to offer are 25-30 minutes away. New York City is just over 2-hour’s drive away. A car is recommended to get around the area.

Accommodation Details

This residence has 6 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms spread out over the main building and the yurt. On the ground floor is an open concept living space: a double-height lounge with built-in sofas and an open wood fireplace that opens to a large kitchen with an island, a dining table seating 6 (which can easily be extended to 8 with a second table nearby), a mud room, and a downstairs bathroom with a shower. On the 1st floor is a mezzanine landing that overlooks the living space. Further, on this 2nd floor are 4 bedrooms with 10 beds: a primary kingsize bedroom, the kids’ room with 2 single / twin beds and a bunk bed sleeping 4 in total, a queensize bedroom, and a bedroom with a single / twin, with another single pull out bed. On the same floor there is on bathroom with a double head shower and steambath that is accessible from the primary king bed room and the kids room as well as a family bathroom with a shower over tub. Additionally on the top floor there is cozy windowless attic room with a queen mattress on the floor and some reading lights (known as the Harry Potter room). The roof has a terrace with views over the treetops and Overlook Mountain. There is also a yurt sleeping up to 4 with a double / full bed and bunk bed -- there is a sink but no bathroom.

Style Notes

A place in the woods. This incredible house tucked away on an abandoned quarry clearing has its own magic and it’s extremely livable with open spaces and furniture you don’t have to worry about too much. It’s a place for all seasons with a cozy wood burning fireplace and large living space for the winter, and an outside dining area and grill for relaxing summer nights. Natural light and views of the trees flood in. We love the rustic, log-hewn kitchen island, the bull's head over the fire, the wood-fired sauna for relaxing and telling stories, and the woodfired pizza / bread oven. A place to indulge every Swallows & Amazons fantasy in grand style.

Payment policy
When a host accepts your booking, we will automatically charge your card 30% of the total cost of the stay on acceptance if the check in date is more than 6 weeks away. We will send you a balance payment reminder at 6 weeks before check in and you will be required to submit your payment to finalise your reservation. If a host accepts your booking and the check in date is 6 weeks away or less, we will charge your card 100% of the total cost of the stay on acceptance.
Cancellation policy
For cancellations notified up to 6 weeks before the check in date, guests will receive a refund of any amount paid less 10% of the total cost of the booking. For cancellations notified at 6 weeks or less before the check in date, no refunds are given unless the host agrees. If a host does agree to a full or partial refund, this amount will be returned to the guest less 10% of the total cost of the booking. Some hosts will also allow a stay to be rescheduled. Guests should contact their host for further information regarding any request to change the dates of a stay.

I am a radiologist from Austria who fell in love with upstate New York. When we came across this exceptional piece of land we knew we had to go for it! We put a yurt up and had 3 wonderful years of going there with the kids all through summer and winter before building this house that we love so much. But mow the kids are older and we are not there all the time anymore, so we thought it could be nice to open it up for other families to enjoy!
