Perks for the Parents

This spacious Shelter Island home is ideal for summers away from the city, with large family living spaces, a beach a short walk away and a large backyard for outdoor fun. In a wonderful location for a family vacation, the house has a wonderful screened-in cedar room, hammocks in the backyard and a fire pit for adult-supervised roasting marshmallows and making s'mores on summer nights.

Why Kids Love it

Children of all ages will enjoy the space. Younger children will relish in the playhouse and jungle gym in the backyard, and older children can walk or ride bikes to the beach around the corner - or even go off and explore the island. To make a stay easy, a crib is provided upstairs and the hosts can leave a bassinet, pack and play, high chair, wagon, and baby monitor if requested. Bathrooms include tubs and showers.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 1 week for summer 2022 bookings. The house is only for rent in the summer season (May 1 through Labor Day). Longer term rentals (for the season) get discounted rates (not including fees). No pets are allowed. The stairs have a safety gate. There are several ways to get to Shelter Island: you can rent a car and drive from any airport. Cars drive onto the ferry and it is just a short trip across the water. There is also a Jitney bus service or commuter railway from Manhattan or Brooklyn that will take you to Greenport or Bridgehampton, where you can catch the ferry.

About the Location

The house is in Silver Beach, an area on the southeast of Shelter Island, close to the Peconic River. It is a short walk - 2 blocks - from a private community beach. Shelter Island is a jewel on Long Island's East End. Sandwiched in between the glittery Hamptons and the wineries of the North Fork, you have easy access to both, but are perfectly tucked away on an island only accessible by ferry. It takes approximately 3 hours to reach the house from New York City by car. Car rental is useful but not essential. You will may want a car to go to dinner but you can take taxis if you don't have one. Note: the local taxis don't have car seats available. Bike rentals are available in town for exploring and you can walk to the local beach. You can park at the house.

Style Notes

Relaxed Beach House. This light filled, relaxed and spacious home is great for families and includes design touches and cozy spots. The couches are from George Smith, the standard bearer of British upholstery, while there are Bose and Sonos speakers throughout the house and a newly-refurbished kitchen well appointed with Kitchen Aid appliances. The crown jewel of the house is the screened-in outdoor cedar room, cool on a summer's night and perfect for al fresco family dining. We love the pretty twin beds with upholstered headboards, the wonderful backyard and the serene decor throughout.
