Perks for the Parents

This historic home in Sherman Commons, CT comes with a gunite lagoon swimming pool and a glamping shed. It sleeps 10. Parents with a flair for architecture will love this traditional farmhouse, full of historic charm and quirky details. The rustic style matches the laid-back rural surroundings - there are views of a picturesque country wheat field just behind the pool and from all the East-facing rooms. Despite its historic roots, the hosts have updated the house with modern amenities to create a comfortable family stay. The chef's kitchen is well outfitted with everything you’ll need for family meals, including a Kitchen Aid Artisan mixer, water carbonator by Aarke, demitasse Coffee with a Bialette, Mocca master, cookware by Staub, Allclad, Le Creuset and more.

Why Kids Love it

The property is expansive which allows children to run around without restriction. There’s a large backyard to run off some steam, as well as a swing connected to a tree at the back of the property. The glamping shed works well as a kids’ hang out, or for teens who need a bit of privacy. There’s also some toys and games for children of all ages to play with during their stay. This area is great for kids who like to explore outdoors, with plenty of parks, hiking trails and nature reserves surrounding the local town. Further afield, kids will love a trip to Thrillz High Flying Adventure Park and there is a watersports center at Candlewood Lake (both 30 minutes’ drive).

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights. Safety notes: there is a steep staircase but stair gates are built into the wall. (The hosts’ children and elderly parents go up and down the stairs with no problem, but they are happy to supply further info or photos on request.) One of the bedrooms has French doors leading to the garden so this is best suited to older kids or adults. The pool area is gated separately from the garden. There is space to comfortably park up to 8 cars. The house comes with air conditioning, dishwasher, washer/dryer, TV and WiFi.

Accommodation Details

This residence has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. Downstairs, the beautifully understated kitchen leads to a cozy living room and a formal dining room (seating 6). Upstairs, there are 2 kingsize bedrooms and 2 queensize bedrooms, each with Helix hybrid mattresses and luxury bedding from Ralph Lauren and West Elm to complement each room’s design. Outside, there is a Gunite lagoon pool with a stone grotto waterfall and stone terrace, surrounded by beautiful, established perennial gardens and blooming trees making for a very private and whimsical setting. There are Leagrave Restoration hardware furnishings for lounging by the pool or entertaining in the garden, which complement the lavish florals of lavender, peonies, poppies and lilies. Eating under the stars is the host’s favorite, so there is an outdoor table off the living room with a barbecue, as well as string lights to highlight the area for memorable summer nights.

Style Notes

Characterful farmhouse. This designer/artist’s home has been beautifully restored with all the modern amenities while retaining the historical character of the house. Built in 1790, it maintains the old world beauty of homes built long ago, such as traditional wooden floorboards and exposed ceiling beams. The hosts have updated the home with modern art and sculpture, juxtaposed with the classic farmhouse architecture, and modernized the property with a contemporary thoughtfulness: the kitchen boasts no plastic - just stainless and glass containers and utensils. We love the brick-built fireplace in the bedrooms, the rich blue bookshelves in the dining room and the stunning square window in the living room.
