Perks for the Parents

An architect-designed home in Sintra, Portugal with a private swimming pool, spectacular views and stunning minimalist interiors. It sleeps 12. The kitchen is a hero space here, with a large dining area, additional breakfast bar and open plan layout to allow for parents to interact with the family while cooking. There’s space for everyone to relax here, whether in the living areas, on the terraces or on the lawn - plus plenty of bedrooms for those traveling with a nanny or an au pair. Adventurous parents can access walking or biking trails in the mountains nearby, while sun-worshippers will love the sun-drenched private pool and the nearby sandy beaches which run along Portugal’s picturesque west coast.

Why Kids Love it

The residence has plenty of entertainment for children under 10 - they’ll love the quirky windmill space which is filled with games, books and toys and the foosball table. The large outdoor space is big enough for wheeled toys and the swimming pool is a lovely playground on hot days (and not-so-hot days as well!). A crib, high chair, baby toys and a baby bath can be provided on request. It’s a short walk from the forest and a short drive from the beach, where older kids and teens can try water sports. For cultural days out, Sintra has a natural history museum, botanical gardens and playgrounds, or visit the fortresses and castles of historic Cascais (both 20 minutes’ drive).

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights. Safety notes: there are stairs indoors and outdoors (with no stair gates) and the swimming pool is not gated, so non-swimmers should be supervised at all times. Two of the bedrooms are connected to the garden. Rates include cleaning services during your stay. There is ample parking space around the house, car rental is recommended. The hosts have a private parking place by Praia Grande, 20 meters from the beach, which guests can use during their stay. The hosts have updated the home with 500 mbps Wi-Fi coverage across the entire house, underfloor heating and Apple TV with the most complete Portuguese IPTV services. Outside there’s a heat lamp for cooler days, as well as a sun umbrella, dining table and sofa for warmer weather.

About the Location

The villa is located in Penedo, a small village within the UNESCO rated Sintra natural park in Portugal. The house sits on the hills of Sintra, with 360 views of the mountain, sea and coastline to the north (and 200 meters from the trekking and cycle paths in the mountains). Although secluded, with no adjacent houses, this unique location is just 45 minutes from the airport, 30 minutes from Lisbon city center, 20 minutes from Cascais or Sintra and 10 minutes from the beach (Praia Grande, Adraga or Guincho). You’ll find plenty of excellent restaurants nearby offering fresh seafood, traditional Portuguese cuisine or international family-friendly dishes such as pizza and pasta.

Accommodation Details

Fully renovated in 2021, the villa has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms set on 2 levels. On the lower level, there’s 2 bathrooms and 4 of the bedrooms: 2 double twins (one can be used as a king), a bunk room with another twin, and a single-over-double bunk room. On the upper level, there’s an open plan eat-in kitchen/dining space, a large spacious hall connecting to a living room, the windmill space and a mezzanine with another living room. This floor also has a primary bedroom, with a kingsize bed and a dedicated bathroom and a separate family bathroom. Outside, a large terrace connects the kitchen, hall and living room with an outdoor dining area to make the most of those beautiful views. The large grassy garden connects the 2 levels, with a scenic swimming pool and another separate outside living space.

Style Notes

Design icon. The building has been developed around an original windmill by a renowned Portuguese architect. Set in a plot of 1.5 hectares of forest, the property has been designed with simple clean lines and large angled windows which allow floods of light into the rooms. The overall feel is minimalist and uncluttered, with a sleek integrated kitchen and tactile polished concrete floors. The hosts have chosen to mix elegant and design-led pieces with relaxed oak furniture to create an inviting family space. We love the high-back dining bench in the kitchen, the terracotta and peach dining chairs and the unique curved staircase, marking out the original structure of the property.
