Perks for the Parents

A creative and colorful Casa occupying a hilltop position with views of the Serra de Sintra, ideally placed for exploring the city, coast and countryside. It sleeps 3-4. Cozy yet spacious, this charming residence has plenty of nooks and relaxing areas to unwind in. The downstairs is open plan in style allowing for sociable meal prep, leisurely dining and snug evenings gathered around the fire, while the primary bedroom provides some privacy with its own ensuite bathroom. The alfresco terrace has a large dining table and plenty of shady spots from which to soak in the surrounding views of the hills and sea. The village of Penado is very safe with excellent hiking and biking trails into the Sintra mountains in close proximity, as well as easy access to local beaches and surf schools. The cultural and foodies delights of Sintra and Cascais are a short drive away and Lisbon is very doable in a day offering the perfect mix of town and country vacationing.

Why Kids Love it

A bright and joyful home with style to wow both parents and kids, from the hand painted fresco walls to the playful tiles and imaginative splashes of color at every turn. There are numerous hideouts including a treehouse style den space on a mezzanine accessible by ladder and a living area with a video projector with most streaming apps. The playfully decorated smaller bedroom is filled with toys, books and games and there are plenty of fun spots to discover outside too. Animal lovers may enjoy a visit from Nina, a friendly local cat – though she is just as happy to leave guests to it if not encouraged. On the doorstep there is plenty to explore from village walks to mountain trains and a decent selection of local beaches with surf schools. For those with an interest in history there are palaces and castles to discover at nearby Sintra. Stairgates and fireplace guards are also set up for younger toddlers.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 6 nights in Summer; 2 nights all other times. A tourist tax of €2/night (for anyone over 13 years) is charged per person locally. Check in: 3pm-8pm. Check out: 12pm. The casa has stairs to the kitchen that can be closed by a wooden gate, and ladder style stairs to the mezzanine that can be flattened to the wall if parents would rather restrict access. Inside, the doorways to the hall and some of the rooms are low so taller guests may need to bear this in mind. Toddlers and younger guests should be supervised in the garden as there are raised paths and low walls without railings. There is WiFi at the property and a bathtub. Please note that there is no clothes washing machine or microwave. Car hire is recommended to fully explore the area due to its relatively remote location. Please note that the streets from the main road up to center of the village are narrow and traffic runs in both directions; the hosts advise parking near the chapel and walking to the house from there (around 100 meters). The residence is pet friendly; please let the hosts know at the time of booking if wishing to bring a pet.

Style Notes

Colorful Casa. Recently renovated and designed by a creative actress and photographer team, the house oozes artistic style and charm. The decorative process paid close attention to local materials adding statement colors and touches of contemporary freshness to the traditional casa building. Original features and period detailing such as the brick floors, baseboard tiles, fireplaces, doors and window shutters have been preserved and uplifted by vintage finds, lamps and furniture. The stunning wall fresco in the living room is by the host’s friend, the artist Tomás Colaço. Modern upgrades include new windows, bathrooms, kitchen and wood flooring add some warmth, comfort and luxury. We love the panoramic views from the huge picture windows in the primary bathroom, and the bold color scheme and hand picked tiled that make each space unique.

My wife (Katrin Kaasa, actress) and I (photographer) renovated this charming house during 2023. We both love to travel and discover places where we want to stay forever. Hope our house could be one of those for you.
