Perks for the Parents

This gorgeous house on a lagoon with a private swimming pool, bicycles and a kayak has uninterrupted views of turquoise water and nature on the doorstep. It sleeps up to 8. Parents will enjoy relaxing by the pool or on the shady verandah and cooking in the stunning open plan kitchen / diner. Older kids especially will have a ball here – cycling on the path in the front of the house (it’s a v friendly neighborhood) where there is no traffic, splashing in the pool, learning SUP or having fun in the kayak or on the boogie boards. For wintry days there are family board games, books and the wood stove.

Why Kids Love it

This is the perfect spot for adventurous, outdoor kids – there is so much to do. The Langebaan Lagoon has little beaches with boats and yachts to watch and a long beach for kite surfing (one of the best places to learn to kitesurfing in the world). A water park is close by, fishing virtually on your doorstep, a beach to surf or boogie board a drive away, plus animal watching in the West Coast National Park. Back at the house, there are games to entertain kids including table tennis and fuse ball, and the pool of course. For early risers and teenagers, a separate TV room will be popular.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights, 3 nights on long weekends, 7 nights in peak season (Dec & Jan). There is an internal and an external staircase as the house is on 2 levels, which would be a concern for unsupervised toddlers and crawlers. There is a drop off the verandah and although there is a balustrade, small kids will need to be watched. The pool is not fenced and is directly accessible from the house. There is an iPod docking station in the living room and WiFi. Car hire is essential to get around and explore the area.

About the Location

The lagoon house is on the saltwater Langebaan Lagoon in the Western Cape and in the town of Langebaan, a popular holiday spot known for its beautiful beaches and clear water. Langebaan has plenty of dining options. The house is a 5-minute drive to Shark Bay for kite surfing and watersports and to the West Coast National Park for cycling, hiking and nature. Langebaan Yacht Club with sailing, angling, kayaking and boating is a 2-minute drive. Cape Town and its international airport is about 1 hr, 40 mins’ drive.

Accommodation Details

This waterfront house has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and is on 2 levels. There are 3 courtyards, some shaded, with chairs, tables and comfy seating, a pizza oven, outdoor shower, and a private swimming pool outside with sun beds and umbrellas. Inside are 1 living room with a wood stove and views of the lagoon, an open plan kitchen / dining area with a kitchen table seating up to 8 and a long dining table seating up to 10, and a separate TV room with satellite TV. There are 4 bedrooms: 2 kingsize, both with their own soaking tubs and walk-in showers, and 2 double / full bedrooms that share a bathroom. There are 2 single sofa beds for kids if a young child needs to be with parents, and a fun loft bed suitable for an older child in the master suite.

Style Notes

This stunning family holiday home has uninterrupted views in all directions, pretty courtyards and decks with lush pot plants, a comfortable sitting room and extra comfortable TV room. Recently renovated, the space is lovely to be in even if you decide not take part in any of the many activities available. The décor is inspired by Greece with white and blue accents and Greek-bought products. The 4 bedrooms all have comfy mattresses, 100% cotton sheets, down duvets and feather pillows, while the bathrooms have fluffy white towels, heated towel rails, handmade soaps and beautiful chambray gowns. We love the decorative fishing rods and surfboards on the walls, the views, and the outdoor dining space that’s perfect for al fresco feasts.

South Africa, Africa

Wild and free

South Africa’s wildlife makes big kids out of all of us. With everything from lions, giraffes and leopards in the legendary safari parks, to free-range African penguins on Boulder’s Beach in Cape Town, there are endless delights for animal lovers. Cable car trips up Table Mountain, boat trips to Nelson Mandela’s prison on Robben Island and long lunches in local wineries round off a perfect travel destination for a family. Beyond Cape Town, the winelands and coast beckon, with dramatic scenery and safari camps to help create a picture-perfect family vacation.
