Perks for the Parents

This contemporary lake house in Waccabuc, New York, features direct access to Lake Waccabuc, stylish mid-century interiors and stunning views from almost every room. It sleeps 12 + 1. This spacious home is great for big families, older kids and teenagers, with a flexible layout and space to relax and play. Spend your days swimming in the lake, kayaking across the water to Long Pond Preserve park or lounging on the private deck - this is a great place for families to enjoy nature. It’s also just an hour away from Manhattan, so you can day-trip to your heart’s delight - visit family-friendly tourist spots such as Central Park Zoo, Metropolitan Museum of Art or Rockefeller Center, before returning to a relaxing natural setting, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Why Kids Love it

Kids of all ages will love the amazing experience of swimming in the lake. The water is very clean and usually warm in the summer, so children can spend their days swimming, kayaking, canoeing or diving in from the private float where the water is deep. The lake freezes over where it's shallow in the winter and kids can put on their ice skates and glide across the water. There’s a large green garden with lots of space to play, and the nearby Mountain Lakes Park (2 minutes’ drive or 15 minutes’ walk) offers hiking trails, cross-country ski routes and a ropes course. The huge Ward Pound Ridge Reservation (15 minutes’ drive) has a playground, Nature Museum and miles of hiking routes.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights. This house is set over 2 floors and there are no stair gates. There are sliding doors from the living area, dining area and master bedroom leading out to the decks - both decks are securely fenced. The garden leads directly down to the lake so children should be supervised outside. There is a private dock and private float on the water. The lake is shallow at the dock (around 2-3 feet), but children should be supervised at all times in this area. Pets are welcome upon approval, there is an additional cleaning fee of $100 and security deposit of $500. There are no fences between the neighboring properties so make sure your pet does not run into other gardens. The residence has 4 parking spaces - car hire is recommended - and comes with air conditioning, children’s utensils, dishwasher, washer/dryer, outlet plug, TV and WiFi.

About the Location

This residence is located in Waccabuc, New York, part of Westchester County in the Hudson Valley. While it’s considered a ‘suburb’ of New York City, the area is in the middle of nature and is on the gorgeous lake with endless activities all year round. The house is a mile from great hiking trails with views of the nearby lakes and mountains and outstanding opportunities to take in fall foliage. The pretty town of Ridgefield, Connecticut (10 minutes’ drive) has a great choice of restaurants, cafes, theaters, a contemporary art museum and a winter ice rink, while the town of Katonah (also a 10 minutes' drive) offers more restaurants and cafes and is home to the classical music Caramoor Festival in the summer. In the winter, drive 30 minutes to ski at Thunder Ridge or ice skate right on the lake outside the house. Further afield, kids of all ages will love a visit to Legoland Discovery Center (45 minutes’ drive). It is just over an hour’s drive to LaGuardia or JFK airports. The nearest train station is Katonah (15 minutes away) for access to Grand Central Station in Manhattan.

Modern lake house. This recently renovated home is light and bright with pops of color in every room. There are lots of dual aspects windows and balcony doors to let light shine into the property and show off the spectacular views. The hosts have an eclectic and stylish mix of mid-century furniture, high-end kitchen finishes and luxurious bathrooms: 1 has a steam room/hammam and the master bathroom has a freestanding bathtub, nestled in a stunning window viewing point. This place was terrific, and Laurence was an outstanding host. The house was extremely comfortable for our group of six, with room to spare. The deck and the views of the lake were amazing, with plenty of shade and extremely comfortable outdoor furniture for relaxing amid nature. Our kids loved kayaking, canoeing and swimming in the clean, clear water. The floating dock is a short kayak or canoe ride from the shore, serving as great launch pad for the kids to jump and swim where the water is deeper. Inside, the beds and baths/showers were comfortable, and the kitchen well equipped for us to cook meals. Laurence also had some great recommendations for take-out nearby and was very responsive to all of our questions. There is a state park about a half-mile away with great hiking trails. The lake is quiet and peaceful - great getaway all around.

We enjoyed a long holiday weekend at this beautiful home in a gorgeous location. The highlights were kayaking and swimming on the lake, sitting out on the dock and watching the sunset. Laurence recommendations for area hikes and restaurants were spot on.
