Perks for the Parents

This mid-century modern artist-owned home in the peninsula town of Borgarnes has breathtaking views of 2 glaciers and volcanos from the living room and is surrounded by epic nature for all the family to enjoy. It sleeps 6. The host has an art studio and apartment in the 1st story and offers complimentary art lessons for all the family in the morning during the summer months. Her contemporary art and murals adorn almost every wall and there are 2 guitars to play. Given the right conditions, Northern lights are often seen from the house from late August until April.

Why Kids Love it

The great outdoors is all around you here and there's plenty to do with swimming, skateboarding and basketball all on offer in the town. The town's geothermal swimming pool has 3 water slides, indoor and outdoor heated swimming pools, a hot tub, baby wading pool, Finnish sauna and a steam bath. The pool is a real family event in Iceland. There are also 6 basketball courts, a mini skate park and a professional track a 5-minute walk away. The local playground, Bjössaróló, is colorful and handmade entirely from recycled materials. Kids can keep a look out for eagles and the occasional seal in the bay.

Things to Know

There is a 3 night minimum stay and maximum of 6 guests. The residence is located next to a crag and the ocean. Children should not play alone in the garden and should be supervised on the balcony. There are lots of kids in the neighborhood and most kids speak English as a second language. There are plenty of family events such as basketball games and the annual sheep round up. Cable TV is available with an extra charge but many guests don't use it so please request if you would like it connected. Art lessons are usually from 9:30am to 10:15am – please let the host know if you would like to do them. It's best to do a grocery shop close to Reykjavik or Keflavik – local stores may not offer the variety of produce you are accustomed to. Guests are encouraged to avoid plastics and refrain from bringing personal products with pollutants. A travel crib is available on request.

About the Location

Borgarnes is about an hour north of Reykjavík by car on route 1. It is family-friendly town and a great base to visit the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Reykholt Valley, whale watching in Grundafjord, Glymur Waterfalls and the Hafnarfjall mountain. Drive the Snæfellsnes highway and hike the Snæfellsnes glacier as described in the Jules Verne novel 'Journey to the Center of the Earth'. Continue on anywhere in any direction and discover what locals refer to as the REAL Iceland. Enjoy coastal drives, fishing, geothermal hot pot hunting and hiking. During the fall, wintertime and springtime you may be lucky and see the incredible northern lights.

Style Notes

Boutique house with inspirational art. This mid century modern Icelandic home has been featured in Korea's In Style Magazine, in the 'Tales From Iceland' exhibition in Reykjavik and in documentaries about Iceland. Every room is adorned with large artworks and the living room has panoramic views of Hafnarfjall, Eriksjökull and Langjökull glaciers. The bedrooms are furnished with comfortable beds, linens, sheets and towels, and are equipped with blackout blinds and curtains for the summer's midnight sun. The bathrooms have natural Icelandic hand soap and shampoo. We love the welcoming interior space, the books and musical instruments to inspire creativity, and the extraordinary vistas.

I'm an artist, my art studio and apartment are below the rental property. I love traveling, meeting people and creating environments that inspire! I live in Iceland however I also paint often in Italy and exhibit in Switzerland.

Southern Region, Iceland

Lava flows, thermal waters and a glacial lagoon

To the south and east of Reykjavik, Southern Iceland is a land of black sand beaches, puffins and active volcanoes. Drive past farmland, waterfalls and lakes, black stave churches and glaciers and don’t miss Eyjafjallajökull and Hekla, the country’s two most famous volcanoes. Jokulsarlon Glacier lagoon is another must see, and must-dos in the region include horseback riding and hot pool bathing.
