Perks for the Parents

This heavenly retreat with a pool on the south coast of Sri Lanka, 12km from Galle, has been designed and set up to provide the perfect holiday retreat for all of the family, from the open plan living dining area overlooking the pool, to the the kids bunk bedroom, upstairs TV lounge and family sized bathrooms. Parents can take a breather with a full time cook, server and housekeeper. Breakfast is included and the cook can do an additional meal from the menu of simple, delicious dishes inspired by region’s abundant seafood and tropical produce. Bedrooms are serviced daily and the house kept tidy by a full time housekeeper. The house is stocked with kids toys, games, beach gear and pool toys; cribs, high chairs and car seats can all be easily arranged.

Why Kids Love it

The beach, pool and toys will entertain for hours and children will love spotting turtles in the surf in front of the house, catching hermit crabs on the beach and perusing the rock pools. Visit the sea turtle farm and hatchery to release baby turtles carefully into the ocean, or swim in the pool of an old plantation estate set deep in the jungle with monkeys swinging overhead. Spend a day at nearby Wijaya or Unawatuna beaches - a great day for young and old with their calm swimming conditions, great wide beaches and beautiful seaside restaurants. Surf lessons are available very close by for older children, while a day trip to Mirissa for whale watching (November to March) is not to be missed.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 days. Guests should note that there is no pool fence at the house - young children will need extra supervision. The beach directly in front of the house is not always suitable for swimming due to strong currents; however there are a number of calm swimming beaches and beach lagoons very close by. There are stairs in the house, and they are gated at the top and bottom. There are charges if guests wish to order additional meals to breakfast, in line with menu prices sent to guests when they book. Laundry is also extra. Most guests tip the staff but it is at their discretion and not a requirement. There is parking for 2 cars at the front of the house but the hosts do not recommend driving yourself in Sri Lanka - most guests get around by tuk tuk or hire a car and driver. The bedrooms of the house are air conditioned, with living areas well ventilated by fans and the sea breeze. The house has WiFi throughout, cable TV and cooking facilities.

About the Location

The residence is in Thalpe in southern Sri Lanka. Thalpe has a handful of lovely beachside restaurants, and is a 2-hour drive from Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport. It is 15 minutes from the UNESCO world heritage-listed Galle Fort, a charming historic walled town of narrow streets, historic churches and Dutch colonial buildings. Head 15 minutes inland to experience lush expanses of paddy fields, sinhalese villages and tea estates. Visit the yoga studio near Wijaya Beach or arrange private yoga lessons or massages. Browse local antique shops and shop for Sri Lankan furniture and handicrafts. Beaches nearby include Wijaya Beach Lagoon, 5 minutes away and with a beautiful beach restaurant, and Unawatuna, 15 minutes away, a crescent-shaped beach with seafood restaurants and excellent swimming, diving and snorkelling. For surfers there is a playful surf break right outside the villa with more consistent beach breaks close to Galle and some softer reef breaks near Unawatuna.

Accommodation Details

The house comprises 4 bedrooms, each with ensuite, and is perfectly set up for 1 or 2 families or extended families, sleeping 10 in total. The ground floor is set around a stunning open living / deck area overlooking the pool and Indian Ocean, with a king bedroom (with ensuite and outdoor courtyard) and double bunk bedroom (with ensuite). The first floor offers 2 king bedrooms with ensuite open to decks with panoramic Indian Ocean views, with a light-filled TV lounge to the rear.

Style Notes

Modern luxury. This beach house is designed in a simple but beautiful style with concrete floors, white walls and louvered doors opening to tropical sunsets, ocean breezes and uninterrupted Indian Ocean views. An infinity-edged pool, shaded by coconut palms, stretches the length of the house and is overlooked by a stunning open living area. Semi-outdoor bathrooms add a dash of tropical luxury, while simple chic bedrooms with white walls and linen and wooden furniture have an easy-going style.
