Perks for the Parents

A spacious Victorian home in Stoke Newington, north-east London, with an architect-designed renovation and professionally-designed interiors. It sleeps 8. The house is well set up for a very stylish family stay, with 4 separate dining areas and plenty of space for everyone to relax. The guest room is ideal for a nanny or grandparents, with 2 dedicated kids rooms that would suit children aged 7 and up. This area is ideal for families, with parks, green spaces and playgrounds all around. Despite the green suburban surroundings, it’s a quick journey into the busy streets of Shoreditch or a short subway trip into Kings Cross or central London when you’re ready to explore the sights.

Why Kids Love it

The house has plenty of toys and books for children of all ages and is a great family space with larger-than-average rooms. On sunny days, the garden has a small ping pong table and it’s a very short walk from local playgrounds and parks. The beautiful Woodberry Down reservoirs is less than 10 minutes’ walk, which boasts a playground, climbing center, cafe and nature reserve (opened by Richard Attemborugh) and is kitted for all water sports, including sailing and wild open water swimming. It's also close to Clissold Park (10 minutes' walk), which has a wonderful playground and cafe, deer enclosure, butterfly domes and a skate park. For babies and toddlers, there’s a Stokke high chair and a baby bath. For older kids and teens, there’s plenty of books, DVDs and a playstation.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: one week. Shorter stays may be accepted at a higher nightly rate. Safety notes: the house is very secure and has a burglar alarm. It has 2 entrances: 1 at basement level and 1 at the raised ground floor, and is set over 3 floors plus 2 mezzanines. Please note that there are steps going from the garden room to the kitchen that may not be easy for the elderly or toddlers/younger children to climb. The house has a private large driveway for 1 car and an electric charger. A cleaner visits the house each week (5 hours). The host family have a well-behaved dog so those with allergies should be aware. Pets may be considered on request, for an additional cleaning fee. It’s well-placed to reach all the main airports - Stansted, Heathrow and Gatwick are all under 1 hour away by car.

About the Location

The residence is located in Stoke Newington, a vibrant area of London with many parks at walking distance as well as brilliant restaurants, shops and bars. From the house you can walk to the wonderful Church Street, with its beautiful independent shops and restaurants (take a reusable carrier bag, as plastic bags are banned here) or take a train to Hampstead Heath or Liverpool Street to visit Spitalfields Market and Columbia Road Flower Market. For a bustling nightlife scene, head to Shoreditch and Dalston (half an hour’s walk or a short bus ride). The closest subway station on foot is Manor House (12 minutes’ walk) or you can jump on bus from outside the house to Finsbury Park subway station (8 minutes) for the quickest access to the Victoria and Piccadilly line: Kings Cross is 2 stops and Oxford Street is 4 (10 and 15 minutes respectively). Stoke Newington train station is 5 minutes’ walk.

Accommodation Details

The house has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. On the main level, you’ll find a double reception room with dual aspect windows. Downstairs is the kitchen, with a breakfast bar and dining table, which leads to a raised garden room with a corner glass window and a dining area at the back. The primary bedroom has a kingsize bed, while the guest room has a double bed. There are 2 children’s rooms: 1 with a double bed and 1 with a set of bunk beds (single-over-double). It’s suitable for children of all ages, but the hosts would prefer kids aged 7 and up. There is also 1 double airbed and 1 single airbed available for extra guests. The house has a South-facing secluded garden which is 80 feet long, with plenty of mature trees, offering both shade and sun.

Style Notes

Colorful contemporary. The host is an interior designer and the house has been recently refurbished by an award-winning architect. The space is bright, light, modern and sophisticated, with playful color accents. The quirky children’s rooms are wonderfully designed with quirky printed wallpaper, and the modern kitchen boasts luxurious Carrara marble countertops and sleek minimalist cabinetry. We love the painted split-level steps which add lots of character to the structure, the traditional wooden window shutters and the elegant tiling in the bathrooms.

I am an interior designer, but I worked on human rights for many years. My background is in law. My children are 15 and 11, a boy and a girl we love travelling.
