Perks for the Parents

This hacienda in the Andes is full of delights for all the family, with hiking nearby and a secret waterfall. In under half an hour, you could be exploring the province’s 5 key tourist attractions, including lakes, volcanoes and local handicrafts markets. The owners can introduce you to the principles of organic farming. Driver services available to make local exploration super easy. A local cook can be booked and pre-arrival shopping is available on correspondence with the host. There is hiking direct from the back door around a beautiful Andean valley - it is a quiet and beautiful rural spot. The simple life, in this extraordinary landscape, is what it is all about.

Why Kids Love it

This family-friendly rustic residence offers plenty for kids, from an introduction to local farm living to exploration of the Andes’ most exciting cultural and natural sights nearby. Daily hacienda activities include feeding the cows, chickens and bunnies and collecting eggs. The hosts can provide a list of fun family-friendly activities. They suggest visiting Otavalo, the oldest indigenous market in the Andes, discovering the property’s secret waterfall and going on a horse-drawn hayride (extra fee) just for starters.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 1 night, but the hosts advise 3-6 nights as an ideal stay in this area. Many guests from abroad stay for a week (7 days) but a 3-night stay can also be fun. Note that rates listed are for up to 6 guests and that additional guests are charged at $20 per person per night. Babies under 2 go free. Reduced rates are available for stays of a week and longer - please consult with the host for details. The residence has good hot water and internet for the area (but don’t expect New York City speeds). Included in the rate are 1.5-2 hours of housekeeping per day, a 1-hour complimentary horseback ride, fresh vegetables from the organic garden, fresh eggs from the chickens. Kids can learn to milk a cow or to make homemade cheese and empanadas.

About the Location

The residence is just outside Otavalo, the largest pre-Incan market in South America, and close to Cotacachi, Cuicocha, el Cayambe and el Imbabura, 5 of the most sought-after tourist attractions in the Ecuadorian Andes. It is around a 20-30 minute drive from these hotspots and ideal for exploring this part of Ecuador. It is 1 hour 15 minutes from the New Quito International airport and a private driver can be arranged for transfers and tours.

Accommodation Details

This residence is one of 4 villas with 3 large bedrooms, a kitchen, den/TV room and spacious living room. Bedroom 1 has a queensize bed and trundle bed; bedroom 2 has a queensize bed and bunkbed and bedroom 3 has a queensize bed. There is a separate dining room and 3 bathrooms each with a shower. It is surrounded by patios and landscaped gardens.

Style Notes

Rustic Andean style with murals on the walls, cozy living space and lovingly renovated rooms. The open fire is an essential addition in colder months. We love the ranging gardens, filled with hydrangea, trees, lawns and outdoor eating spaces. The views and valley sunsets are beautiful.

I've loved living in Ecuador for the last 9 1/2 years... When I lived in Northern VA, I was a pre-school teacher / Director of a wonderful little preschool that I opened with my mother. Clifton Children's Academy. I grew up in McLean VA most of my life... however, now I find myself completely in love, living in Quito, Ecuador. I love Ecuador and definitely recommend a visit! My husband and I are trying to create a new kind of Vacation Experience on or ranch (Hacienda)... We hope you enjoy it!

The Andes, Ecuador

Condors, crafts and crater lakes

Marvel at soaring condors and help the kids haggle for a handmade souvenir to take home in the Ecuadorian Andes. Otavalo, the largest pre-Incan market in South America, is a weekly fiesta of color and crafts, Cotacachi is known for its handmade leather goods and el Cayambe and el Imbabura are mountains ideal for hiking, and there are cloud forests, thermal baths and active volcanoes to explore too.
