Perks for the Parents

This stylishly renovated barn with saltwater pool is set in one of France’s most celebrated and interesting areas and sleeps 7 across 2 kingsize beds, 2 twin and 1 toddler bed. Surrounded by fields, woods and valley views, it is comfortable and relaxing with great outdoor space. Kids will love the nature walks, the rural vibe and counting the morning butterflies or night stars. The local restaurants are fantastic, and a babysitter can be provided if needs be. Among the many local attractions are the world famous Pech Merle caves, with prehistoric cave paintings, and Cahors with its fine wine and medieval bridge. Parents will love the hotel-style luxuries, such as fluffy robes, toiletries, welcome hamper (with capsules for the Nespresso machine) and a personalized shopping service by the hosts. Bikes are also available to borrow during your stay if you want to explore the area's fantastic bike trails.

Why Kids Love it

Kids love the space and opportunities to let their imaginations run wild. All age groups are catered for at the property - from just a few months old up to teenagers and beyond. There is an endless supply of indoor and outdoor toys, games, books, DVDs, as well as the saltwater swimming pool toys and swim aids for most ages, as well as rabbits and chickens (from which they can collect eggs, if desired!). The large pool uses saltwater, so the kids can play in there for hours, and the garden is quiet and safe to explore. Watch the kids shin up the rigging of the wooden pirate ship, dig in the sand pit, chase each other around the wigwam area or toast marshmallows around the campfire. Along with many historic attractions nearby, there are activity centers, adventure parks and some of the best swimming rivers in France.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 days. Child safety for the owners is a major consideration: there are pool alarms, child safety gates, plug covers, night lights, stair gates and portable door gates and fireguards. The property comes with a 3-wheel stroller, town stroller and baby carrier/sling. The black-out blinds in 2 bedrooms give everyone a good night's sleep. The hosts are proud to offer the facilities and services of a gite complex for just your family: groceries and shopping can be provided in advance and they are happy to supply suppers to your door, as well as wood fire cooked pizzas, treasure hunts and face painting for the kids or babysitting by the owner. The hosts will also provide a comprehensive list of things to do and places to go for families. The local town of Figeac has recently been featured in an article in The Times, describing it as one of the top secret places to visit in France. Although guests can walk to the local village, it's located in the French countryside so a car is strongly recommended. Should guests not want to drive and require help with provision shopping, the hosts can make arrangements to help out. Figeac also has a train station which receives trains from Paris daily (change at Brive). It is 50 minutes by car from Rodez airport, with connecting flights to Paris, and 1 hour 45 minutes from Toulouse airport, with international connections.

About the Location

La Bergerie au Bouyssou is close to the Lot river valley in southwest France. There are a number of official ‘randonnee’ courses locally, as well as a few walking routes directly from the barn which explore the lovely surroundings, including a wander through the ‘Vallee du Moulin’ (water mills) next to the property's woodland. You can also walk to our local village which has a 'sometimes' bar and a bread drop off point. Within 10 minutes' drive you can be in a number of bastide towns and villages, with their medieval buildings and traditional market squares. A new 'super bakery' has opened up 5 minutes away for the best patisserie in the area, as well as exotic filled baguettes ready to haul off to a picnic and a post lunch dip in the river. There are weekly markets in Villefranche de Rouergue (Thursday), half an hour away, and Figeac (Saturday). The area has many of France’s best villages, including Najac, Belcastel and Sauveterre de Rouergue, 5 ‘Bastides’ or 13th Century walled towns, the Millau Viaduct, the tallest bridge in the world, along with Roquefort cheese caves. Also accessible is the world heritage site of Conques.

Accommodation Details

This 3-bedroom, 3-bathroom family retreat is a converted 19th century barn, with architectural features and a spacious interior. Fully equipped, it includes a gourmet kitchen, open plan dining room and salon, 2 kingsize ensuite bedrooms, 1 with private terrace, and a twin bedroom next to the family bathroom. Outside, there are private terraces and gardens with a large private saltwater swimming pool.

Style Notes

Modern rustic. This is an authentic rural idyll, and a mini wonderland for kids. Using natural materials such as oak and stone, the barn has a rustic French country vibe. The region is renowned for its pretty villages, famous caves, hilltop forts and wines, and this property fits in well. We love the excellent playground for kids, the luxurious pool with sails shading the seating areas, and the rustic chic interiors.

In search of a better quality of life for our family, we decided to move to France in 2006. Mother, Father, Daughter, Son in Law and little Millie: we found our gorgeous piece of rural France and have made it home for ourselves and a 'home from home' for our holiday guests. Coming from different backgrounds - Commerce, Architectural, Design and Antiques, we all brought something special to our project to create exceptional holiday accommodation and the result is something that we are very, very proud of. Mix in our passion for hospitality and desire to delight our guests and what you have is the charm of La Bergerie au Bouyssou. The more times that we visited and travelled around France, the harder it was to leave this beautiful and fascinating country. We decided to create the kind of luxury holiday accommodation that we had been searching for, to provide the perfect holiday for lovers of France like ourselves. A considerable amount of research went into the decision to focus on the Aveyron department in the south of the country. We wanted somewhere unspoilt with lots of history and sites of interest, quiet, yet accessible. Here, where we settled 'has it all'. We have travelled the world, visited some amazing places, yet we have decided that our very favourite destination is a spot at Le Bouyssou, to sit peacefully and gaze across our gorgeous valley. We joined Kid and Coe to have a channel to reach families around the world in search of a magical, adventurous, safe, invigorating, stimulating and restorative environment and share with them our little piece of French paradise.

The Lot, Southwest France

Vineyards, gorges and prehistoric caves

Bordering the Dordogne in central France, the beautiful Lot includes dramatic gorges, lazy rivers, vineyards and prehistoric caves. Enjoy all of France's bounty: cheese, sunshine, sunflowers and fields of flowers, and don't miss the cave paintings at Peche Merle.

The Bergerie is a true paradise for kids. The playground and extensive toy collection are amazing. Our kids simply loved it and so did we. Sarah and her family took very good care of us and prepared delicious meals, pizzas and cakes. We loved having dinner on the beautiful terrace and have very much enjoyed the pool area and garden. Very recommendable.
