Perks for the Parents

On an endless beach a short walk from the vibrant bars and restaurants of Trancoso’s Quadrado, Villa San Marcos was recently described by Centurion Magazine as THE property to rent in Brazil, and sleeps up to 18. It is regarded as one of the ultimate beach houses in the Americas. Laid out with 4 guest wings, each with their own verandas, ensuite bathrooms with outdoor showers and air conditioning. With plenty of space inside and out, plus beachfront access and a pool, the residence is suitable for large groups of friends and families with children of all ages. The villa is fully staffed.

Why Kids Love it

With an 80-ft swimming pool and direct beach access, this property is great for kids. Access the swimming pool via a bridge connected to the house. Additional perks for families include a home cinema, barbecue and babysitters on request for an extra cost. Five of the 9 bedrooms can be made up with twin beds, giving flexibility for a large multigenerational group. The outdoor showers add a touch of fun to getting cleaned up at the end of the day. Kids can make friends and play football at the Quadrado, enjoy swimming and playing on the beach and take boat trips to nearby beaches and islands.

Things to Know

There is 24 hour security. Some safety concerns for those with young children: there is a narrow river running through the property and a gate leading directly to the beach. The swimming pool is not fenced or alarmed - children may need supervision. A daily maid service (Monday-Friday), English-speaking concierge, live-in housekeeper, 2 maids and a gardener are included. Additional professional cooks, maids, babysitters, and barmen may be provided for an extra cost and paid for locally when requested in advance. Custom pre-arrival grocery shop strongly recommended, meaning that you will arrive to a kitchen full of food, a fridge full of cold drinks and that the first meal can be served shortly after your arrival. Tips, transfers, car rental, food and beverages are not included in the rate. There is an excellent private landing strip at Terravista, just 10 minutes away from the village, and helicopter and private plane charters can be arranged for an additional cost.

About the Location

The residence is on a beach 2km from the heart of Trancoso in northeastern Brazil. Trancoso is a charming colonial village set around a large, grassy main square known as the Quadrado. It is surrounded by colorful native houses presided over by a small church, and has dazzling views of the beaches and ocean. In the evening everyone heads to the Quadrado to sip caipirinhas and browse the shops and boutiques. It’s a relaxed place for a family vacation with a sprinkling of glamour: many of the best known Brazilian film-makers, models, journalists, and singers are regulars at the bars and restaurants in town. Car hire is recommended, but not essential. Cars be can be rented locally in Trancoso and the hosts are happy to help with these arrangements. Private transfers with trusted drivers can be arranged from the Trancoso airport. International visitors tend to fly into Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo and take a local flight to Porto Seguro. Transfers with trusted drivers can be arranged from Porto Seguro airport, 1.5 hours’ drive away.

Accommodation Details

This 9-bedroom villa includes 4 bedrooms with kingsize beds and 9 bedrooms with twin beds convertible to king on request, set across 4 guest wings each with a veranda and ensuite bathroom. There are multiple open decks and terraces on different levels of the house, and beyond the 9 bedrooms, there is a living room, a dining room for 16, a home cinema with a large TV, a kitchen and breakfast area. There is an external dining/living area, a BBQ, an 80-foot swimming pool, a large ground floor deck, and a first floor terrace with beach views. The house is connected to the swimming pool and beach by a short wooden bridge built over a narrow river running through the property.

Style Notes

The house was built entirely of wood and completed at the end of 2005. It uses the finest local materials, and the architecture reflects a modern take on traditional Bahian design. Sig Bergamin was responsible for the layout and interior decoration of the house, and he created a hugely stylish mix of rattan furniture and thick, natural fabrics that never lose sight of the Brazilian beach house feel. There is a double height living room ventilated by cantilevered walls that open and let in the sea breeze. The pool area has a spacious deck with pool furniture, built-in speakers, and a gate opening directly onto the beach. We love the huge comfortable communal spaces and the inescapable ocean view.

Luxury on the beach

Life is lived at a relaxed pace in this former fishing village turned barefoot chic hangout, an hour and a half's flight north of Rio de Janeiro on the south Atlantic coast. The beaches are beautiful - some fringed with palm trees, others with beach bars - and when the tide goes out, reefs create perfect natural swimming pools for tots.
