Perks for the Parents

This converted 14th century water mill is in the grounds of a chateau and surrounded by 1500 acres of gardens, rolling meadows and beautiful woodland of the Dordogne Valley. It sleeps 12 + 2. Still providing fresh water to the chateau, this historic residence is family-friendly with plenty of space indoors and out. Rooms are warmed by the sun in the summer and by under-floor heating and open fires in winter. Parents will appreciate the complimentary daily delivery of an organic French breakfast that includes bread, patisseries, local yoghurts and fruit in season, jam, honey and butter, together with hot drinks, fresh milk and fruit juice.

Why Kids Love it

The whole estate is a magical place for kids – nature, animals, secret gardens, greenwood and the chateau within walking distance, make it feel like living inside a fairy tale. Kids will love exploring the grounds (with fruit trees, forests, fields and flowers) and playing in the small creek on the property when they’re not splashing in the pool; there's also a clean and fresh river less than 10 minutes away for swimming. There’s plenty to do nearby including the water park Parc De Loisirs with slides and a lake with inflatables, electric boats and pedal boats. The world-famous cave paintings of Lascaux are an hour’s drive, and the Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park with its natural wonders and pretty villages is just over an hour by car. The surrounding towns and villages are full of prehistoric sites, interesting museums and picturesque farms too.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 3 nights except for August, 7 nights required. Inquire for availability, hosts have flexibility. Children will need supervision around the ungated pool. There is a small creek on the side of the property. Renting the property includes all electricity, gas, water, heating, a daily housekeeping service, full gardening and pool cleaning service, household linen and pool towels, and a daytime concierge service. Pool can be heated upon request at an additional cost. There is plenty of off-road, private parking. The first floor bedroom in the main house has a small additional bed in the dressing room which may be used as an extra children’s bed on request (supplement €30 per night). Two cribs are available on request. The house does not have air conditioning, but is made of old stone so the temperature stays very fresh inside during the summer. Fans can also be provided on request.

About the Location

Le Pressoir is set in the estate of the historic Château de La Bourlie, between the Renaissance town of Sarlat and Bergerac in the Dordogne region of southwest France. The area is a protected spot of natural beauty in the heart of the Dordogne valley. The closest village (Urval) is just a few minutes' drive, and there is a supermarket just 10 minutes away. The mill is one of several holiday residences on the chateau grounds including the main chateau, a converted tobacco barn and glamping tents. The surrounding towns offer different food and antique markets each day. Local activities abound: swim or kayak in the river, hike within thousands of acres of woods, visit local vineyards, play golf, horse-ride or sightsee. The nearest airports are in Bordeaux and Toulouse, about 2 hours away. Buisson train station is 7km away.

Accommodation Details

This residence has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms and comprises a 4-bedroom main house and 2-bedroom cottage. Five of the bedrooms can be configured as kingsize or twin rooms. In the main house on the first floor is a large double-height living space with an open fire, a kitchen with an open fire and a table seating 4, a dining room seating 12, and a kingsize or double twin bed room with a dressing room, plus a bathroom with a tub, shower and double sinks. On the second floor is the master kingsize / twin bedroom with a dressing room and ensuite bathroom with a tub and shower. Two other bedrooms – 1 double and 1 kingsize or twin – share a bathroom with a shower and bath tub and combine to make a great shared play space for kids. The cottage has a first floor kingsize or twin bedroom and a bathroom with a shower and bath. Patio doors lead out to the pool and garden. Upstairs is a kingsize or twin room with a separate entrance and bathroom with shower and bath.

Style Notes

French country chic. Le Pressoir was completely restored in 2007 and within its 14th century walls is an unfussy, contemporary interior. The design has been influenced by natural materials with artisanal crafted pieces made from timber felled and cured on the estate. Art and nature go together with a vibrant use of color, texture and mid-century modern and antique furniture. Private and surrounded by fields, flowers and plants, this is the place to retreat from the world. We love the ancient wooden beams, the beautiful patterned rugs strewn over concrete floors, and the large windows that let in the sunlight and fresh air.

Summer seems so far away in the past by now. Yet Le Pressoir seems to be our favourite memory of a summer together. We sometimes daydream of returning for Christmas and New Year but would most probably try again next summer. Beautiful property, elegantly decorated, homely touches. We loved the fresh breakfast every morning. The outdoor area and the pool specially were wonderful though I think the fireplace was our favourite spot. Looking forward to more memorable moments at Le Pressoir!
