Perks for the Parents

This beautiful home on the canal in Utrecht, The Netherlands, comes with amazing kids’ play equipment, a huge backyard and stylish period features. It sleeps 6 + 1. This stunning residence has been recently updated to include luxurious home comforts like underfloor heating and cooling, a fully-equipped kitchen and modern serene bathrooms. Designed with both kids and adults in mind, it’s super stylish and contemporary yet fun - it’s filled with toys and play areas to keep the little ones entertained. The whole family will love this city: Utrecht is known for its pretty canals and safe cobbled streets (ideal for bikes or walking with children) and the relaxed atmosphere extends to its laid-back eateries, family-friendly museums, and spacious green parks.

Why Kids Love it

This house is an absolute dream for kids. The playroom downstairs is full of toys and has a gymnastics area, while the children’s bedrooms are filled with wonderful play items such as the old fair car, a swing and a climbing rope. The spacious grassy backyard has a big trampoline and the shed contains outdoor toys and bicycles. The shed also connects with a semi-closed square where the children can play along with the local kids. For rainy days, the kids can watch Netflix movies on the wall projector in the living room, play piano, or visit one of the city’s child-friendly museums: the Sonnenborgh observatory, the railway museum, or the Nijnte children’s museum (all less than half an hour away).

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 7 nights and 14 nights in summer holidays. Safety notes: there are 2 sets of stairs with no stair gates, so younger children should be supervised. Window guards are available. The house has fire extinguishers and wired smoke detectors. The hosts have 1 travel crib and 2 high chairs at the dining table - the kitchen is well-equipped for children. Car hire is not essential here - it’s a very central location and the public transport is efficient and reliable - but there is street parking available outside (for an additional fee) or free parking around half a mile away. The hosts have adult bikes (with child seats) available to borrow.

About the Location

The house is located just on the edge of the city center in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Utrecht airport is around 1 hour by public transport, or 25 minutes by car. The central station is a 15 minute walk or a few minutes by bus. This neighborhood has a wide choice of (child-friendly) coffee shops and cafes - the hosts are happy to suggest local recommendations. The centuries-old city center is just 5-10 minutes’ walk along the picturesque canals, which are lined with green parks. Climb the gothic Dom Tower (465 steps) for amazing views across the city, take an underground walking tour to discover the area’s architectural ruins, or relax in the Oude Hortus historical botanical gardens.

Accommodation Details

This residence has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, set over 3 floors. Downstairs there is a huge open plan living space with a kitchen, play room and living room, which leads out to the garden. On the first floor there are 2 bedrooms (the master with a kingsize bed and the guest room with a queensize bed). The master bedroom leads out to a terrace overlooking the backyard. The first floor also has a study, a spacious bathroom with soaking tub and double shower, a separate toilet and a laundry area. The second floor has 2 spacious (children’s) bedrooms, each with a single bed and a bathroom with shower. Outside there is over 1600 square feet of private garden - a great place to relax and have dinner, in the sun or shade.

Style Notes

Industrial meets contemporary. Originally an old blacksmith’s house, the hosts have transformed the building into a wonderful family home. Bright, light, and sophisticated, it blends a modern combination of earthy colors, concrete, monochrome tones, glass, and wood materials to create a calm atmosphere. This house has a sense of history and character: think 17th century beams and blacksmith ironwork with sympathetic modern updates, such as the wood burner and unique Dutch furniture. We love the ‘hidden’ staircase, the black Crittal-style interior doors, and the beautiful original balcony doors in the bedroom.

Our family of 4 (2 adults, 4y/o, 11 m/o) had the most wonderful stay at Loes' home. The house was beautiful and had everything we needed for a convenient, comfortable stay. Loes and her daughter met us at check-in and showed us around the home and even left a welcome gift for us and our children. They made us feel right at home and we felt much more like we were staying in a friend's home than in a rental home. Although the home was a little bit of a walk away from the main train station and city center, it was in a fantastic location to explore Utrecht and was located in a family-friendly neighborhood with a very nearby grocery store, as well as restaurants, shops and parks. Loes gave us many recommendations for things to do and places to eat and they were all fantastic. The home itself was fantastic for a stay with young children, with many toys and fun activities for kids and an entire enclosed back yard area, with an in-ground trampoline as well. Our son loved this home so much and said he never wanted to leave.
