Perks for the Parents

This 3-bedroom Vashon Island house is on 210 ft of private waterfront with spectacular views across the Puget Sound to Mount Rainier, and just 30 minutes by boat from Seattle. It sleeps 8 + 1. The bedrooms spread out over 2 floors make this vacation house ideal for families traveling together or families with grandparents / older children. The chef's kitchen includes a Viking range and KitchenAid mixer for every cooking or baking need. The multiple, separate decks allow for quiet relaxation, even while there are games of hide and seek going on in the yard or beachcombing on the waterfront.

Why Kids Love it

The property's rocky, sandy beach is endless entertainment for all kids, from toddlers to teenagers. There are sea anemones, sand dollars, starfish, tiny crabs and more to discover at lower tides along with skipping rocks and playing in the surf. There are pool floats that can be used in the sea over the summer, and kayaks for adventurous parents to venture out in. The fire pit overlooking the water is perfect for families with older children to roast s'mores. Inside the house, there are lots of toys and books for babies and children.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 2 nights. The island is very safe and although the house is very private, there are nearby neighbors. Young children should be supervised on the decks and by the water. There are a few drop-offs in the garden and this property has no bathtub. There is parking for 2 cars along the private road and 3 more cars can pull into the driveway. The main door has a keyless entry. The house is on 2 stories and the decks span 3 stories with a long staircase down to the beach. There are no stair gates. The nearest airport is Seattle-Tacoma International (1 hour away via car and ferry).

About the Location

This residence is located on the north end of Vashon Island, the largest island in the Puget Sound, Washington. The house is a 10-minute drive to the dock and the ferry ride to Seattle takes 20 minutes with gorgeous views of the Puget Sound and surrounding mountains. The house is a 6-minute (1.5 mile) drive to downtown Vashon which has quaint shops, kid-friendly cafes, a large gourmet grocery store, bicycle rental facility, climbing gym for kids, large playground, and a state-of-the-art library with a wonderful children's section.

Accommodation Details

This residence built into the hillside has the front door entrance on the upper floor and has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms on 2 stories. A chef's kitchen is open to a large dining table that comfortably seats 7 adults, plus a living room with a fireplace. There is a queensize bedroom upstairs as well. A large kingsize private master bedroom is downstairs, which is roomy enough to fit a toddler bed mattress with bedding and pack n' play. Downstairs there is also a children's bedroom that has twin bunkbeds including a trundle bed (sleeping up to 3). A small playroom is next door that has a loveseat that folds out into a single bed. One bathroom is on the upper floor when you enter and downstairs there is a second bathroom between the master bedroom and the kids room. Each bathroom has a large shower (no tub). There's a laundry room with a full size washer and dryer. Three levels of decks outdoors include a dining table, chaise lounges and a hammock. Outdoor space includes the landscaped garden with a fire pit and private beach.

Style Notes

Beachfront beauty. This contemporary Northwest waterfront house is bright and comfortable with a wealth of beautiful decorative details. The first floor has a European feel with terracotta floors and 4 sets of French doors in the living room overlooking the water and leading to one of the many decks. The lower master queensize bedroom has a stunning gold chandelier over the bed, while the upstairs bathroom is in a French country style with a chandelier and gold gilt mirror. We love the antique door on the upstairs landing; the large blue and gray family bathroom with marble over the double sinks; and many spaces to relax while looking out over the Sound.

My name is Ellie. My husband, Rob, and our daughters, Ernestine (born in June 2014) and Harper (born in November 2022) live in Seattle, Washington. Rob and I have always loved to travel, but we've now developed a love of seeing the world for the first time through our daughters’ eyes.

Vashon Island, Seattle

Although the ferry ride to Vashon Island is only 20 minutes from Seattle or 10 minutes from either Tacoma or the Kitsap Peninsula, it feels like a time machine taking you back to when shopkeepers knew patrons' names and small farms thrived. It is a true island accessible only by boat or private plane. The vibrant artists' community has activities going on year round including a lively farmers market, Point Robinson Park for beach walks and Mt. Rainier photo ops and charming local shops and restaurants.

We enjoyed our stay at Ellie's waterfront home in April and wished we could have been there in the summer. The home was super clean and the beds were very comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked, and we played a couple of the provided board games. Wonderful! I would love to return during warmer weather, but would not opt to come again in the off-season. The tile floors really gave it a summer-cabin feel (cold on our feet!) and the water was inviting, but too cold to enjoy. Or, perhaps a more hearty family would still get out there in all-weather.

Our family of four visited Vashon Island in June 2021. We had a wonderful time. The house was a very well kept and had everything we needed. The pictures posted of the home are fair and accurate except for the view of Mt. Rainier and the Sound which is better in person! Our children (5) and (7) enjoyed playing in the water and hunting for shells and crabs along the shore. We hosted a lunch for our family in Seattle and their teenagers had a good time on the boats and relaxing on the deck. Our host was very kind and attentive. She offered excellent suggestions for activities and really made an effort to ensure we were comfortable and able to enjoy our stay. Pre-trip planning, check-in and check-out were smooth and easy as the host was so well organized. This was our first experience in booking through Kid & Coe and it went really well. Overall we were very happy with our experience.

We had a truly lovely stay at the 86th Place residence. The view is breathtaking, and Ellie has done a great job of highlighting fun places and restaurants on the island. The kayaks were a fun addition, and we and our two teens enjoyed them and the beach walks daily. A very relaxing stay for our entire family. Thank you!

What a magical stay! The views were just phenomenal and just what we'd ordered up to celebrate my husband's birthday. Having just moved to PNW, we were awestruck seeing the orcas while crossing over on the ferry and loved seeing the sea lions/seals (?) pop their heads out of the water as we watched from the deck. We loved making smores at the firepit, and spent many hours beachcombing and kayaking. The house itself is fun and has that classic cottage getaway feel, with great modern updates. The hosts were very responsive and had a fun welcome gift for us when we arrived as well. It was a wonderful place to recharge and escape and we'd love to go back again. Be sure to hit Trader Joes before you hop on the ferry for an easy spot to loadup--once we got to the house we didn't want to leave, even though there were some fun restaurants in town. Also: be sure to check border traffic if you're coming from Vancouver. What should've only taken us 4 hours to get there stretched to over 10 due to being Victoria weekend. (Newbies!) A few suggestions: The showcase photo of this property on Kid & Coe site should be the pic of the house from the beach--truly breathtaking. To the owners, a little info about the wildlife and views directly around the property would be fun for families as well. We ventured into the local bookstore and learned what we thought were tires on the beach were actually the casings of moonsnails! (Apologies on this late review--mom life!)
