Perks for the Parents

Halfway between London and Brighton beach, this mid-century family home is nestled in the historic Sussex village of Lindfield. It sleeps up to 5+1. The kitchen is fully equipped to cook family meals, and there's a Sage coffee machine for early starts. You can work quietly in the study if you need to check in on work during your stay, and the open plan kitchen/living area means you can keep an eye on little ones while you prepare snacks. Parents will love exploring the picturesque village high street (10 minutes' walk), which has properties dating from 1300s and an array of beautiful country mansions (plus one of the county's best coffee shops!). The village is lined with traditional village stores including a butchers, bakers, greengrocers, and a small supermarket, a sustainability store, pizzeria, ice-cream parlor/cafe and 3 traditional English pubs.

Why Kids Love it

This house is dedicated to the 3 kids who live here, with plenty of toys and books in each of the children's bedrooms and fun colorful interiors. There'll love playing on the trampoline and playing with balls and outdoor games on the year-round astroturf. There's a little playground and green play area at the end of the street, or a larger village playground on Lindfield Common (15 minutes' walk). Everywhere you drive around the area is lined with farmland, sheep grazing and open green fields so the kids will get a real taste of the countryside. Little kids will enjoy a visit to local play farms, cute indepedent ice cream parlors, or days out on the south coast beaches.

Things to Know

Minimum stay: 1 week. Exchange only, but open to rental on request - contact the host for details. Safety notes: the back yard is set over multiple levels with tricky steps for toddlers, and the front yard also has a steep incline and steps up to the entrance. There are no stair gates. This is a residential area with lots of close neighbors so guests need to be respectful of noise. The driveway has space for 1 car and there is plenty of off-street parking. The nearest station is Haywards Heath (5 minutes' drive or 20 minutes' walk) and taxis are readily available from here if you prefer to get around by train and avoid car rental. Please note there is no longer a climbing frame in the backyard.

About the Location

The house is located in the village of Lindfield, West Sussex. This historic village is 45 minutes from London by train and 15 minutes from Brighton on the south coast, so you can spend days out by the beach or in the city (from Haywards Heath station). Lindfield village is centered around the Common, a wide open space with a playground, tennis courts and cricket club (where you can watch matches in the summer). You'll find beautiful off-road walks from the village into the surrounding areas of nature (Sussex is known for its many footpaths, or 'twittens') and it's 5 minutes' drive from Ardingly Reservoir, where you can rent paddleboards or kayaks. Brighton is a bustling seaside resort, 15 minutes by train, which is known as the hub of LGBTQ+ community in the UK. The beach is lined with bars, cafes, playgrounds and the city itself is a mini-London of global boutiques, heaps of eateries and independent stores with a notably eco-friendly vibe.

Accommodation Details

The house has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, set over 2 floors. Downstairs, you'll find a large living room with corner sofa and TV, as well as a separate study leading off the hall. The main back room contains the kitchen, dining area and living area, which also leads to the small utility space/WC. Upstairs, there's a primary bedroom with a kingsize bed and ensuite shower room, as well as 3 children's rooms: 1 double room (shown as bunk beds in the photos), 1 single room and 1 nursery with a crib and space for additional single airbeds if required. The family bathroom has a separate walk-in shower and bathtub. The back yard has an astroturf level and an upper grass level with a trampoline and climbing frame.

Style Notes

Mid-century mix-up. This 60-s style house has been transformed to incorporate contemporary styling as well as cottage-style features to reference the history village location. The hosts have chosen dark hues and moody tones to add depth to the spaces, together with pops of unexpected color. The furniture is a mix of vintage pieces and modern basics, while the bathrooms have a distinctly contemporary, fun feel. We love the 1930s curved dining table, the black crittal-style doors leading to the garden and the indstrial-style utility room.

A family of 5 living in rural Sussex

West Sussex, England

Rolling chalk hills and quiet country pubs

Sandwiched between East Sussex, Hampshire and Surrey to the south of London, West Sussex is green and appealing, with quiet country pubs, stately homes and country houses, and pretty villages. Play on Worthing's shingle beaches, visit Arundel Castle and watch a game of cricket on a village green. Half the county is protected countryside, including the chalk hills of the South Downs, making it a great place to visit if you like walking, cycling and watching birds.
