A Local’s Guide to Copenhagen: Hidden Gems & Recommendations from a Mom

Camila Veronica Vesth

Camila Veronica Vesth is a Creative Consultant, Mom and Host at The Blegdamsvej Residence in Copenhagen. Here’s her local’s guide to Copenhagen and her favorite local haunts.

A central canal in Copenhagen, with colorful houses on each side.

Kid-friendly activities in Copenhagen

  • Urban Oase – just across the street from my apartment, with animals for the kids to visit and play with, plus a playground and large grassy areas.
  • Nyhavn / Kanalrundfart – Take a tour by the water, seeing the city, starting at Nyhavn.
  • Fælledparken – lovely large park just 5-7 minutes’ walk from my apartment.
  • Tårnlegepladsen – a large playground, which is gated and perfect on a summer day
  • Trafiklegepladsen – a large gated area where you can bike around and practise how to bike in “traffic”, kid style (It’s bring your own bike though.)

Best Coffee + Bakeries in Copenhagen

  • Coffee Collective (Sankt Hans Torv) has the best sourdough bun with cheese
  • Kaf (Birkegade) has yummy sweet breakfast stuff
  • Andersen & Maillard – Great for breakfast, coffee and really good bread for taking home. Instgram worthy!
  • Rondo – A local super hyped amazing bakery.
  • Mirabelle – amazing large sourdough bread. It’s huge!

Family-friendly restaurants in Copenhagen

  • Poulette – chicken sandwich takeaway, made famous by “The Bear” series. Always long line, but seriously a good chicken burger.
  • Pizza Calabria – our local with a lovely owner – he’s been there for over 30 years and makes yummy simple pizzas. Affordable and just 2 minutes’ walk from our apartment.
  • Nino’s Pizza – outside seating in the sun. Local, cheap, kid friendly!
  • Elmegade – a street full of different take aways and eateries to explore. I love Selfish, a tiny little sushi place with only space for 8-10 people, with the same owner making and serving who has been there for 25-30 years!
  • Ranvborggade – a street full of all kinds of great restaurants. I love sitting at the corner bar, Café Gavlen, and getting a beer watching the world pass buy on their outside seating.
  • Sankt Hans Torv – 2 main restaurants on the square: one has good breakfast (Wulff & Konstali) and the other one is best for lunch, dinner and drinks in the sun (Sebastopol).
  • For fancier meals, I recommend Michelin-star Kiin Kiin.

Drinks in Copenhagen

  • The Flatiron – a tiny stylish cocktail bar with yummy cocktails.
  • Paloma Vermuteria – has seating on the sidewalk, so it’s perfect for a little spot in the sun in the afternoon.
  • Fantom Bar – used to be a local “Brown” bar, now converted into cocktails.
  • Pompette – a cute little winery with small eats and outside seating.

Finally, if you’re exploring Copenhagen with kids, the easiest way to get around is by public transport. Make sure you buy tickets! The local authorities will fine tourists heavily for traveling without a ticket.
